Default UFC Super Fights....

Does anyone remember when the UFC held these fights, called superfights, between the superstars of the time? The first winner of these was Ken Shamrock. This was started when the fighters fought more than one match, if they won, per show and the superfight was seperate from the tourneyment and was an extra fight that headlined the show.

I think that you could almost say that the upcoming Hughes vs. Gracie match is a superfight. Both are very well known, both are huge in the sport, and both are arguably legends (hughes, if not now, in the near future). It has no bearing on the title or the rankings of the weight devision and it is headlining the show. I know that many people think that there could have been different fighters instead of Gracie to fight Hughes and so on, but that being said, this type of match has potential within the UFC.

I think that they should or could bring back the "superfight". This type of match could headline or top off an event that doesnt have a title shot match lined up or it could make a show with a title match even better. There are enough top ranked fighters that could be put in matches like this. I think that, prior to everyone knowing the outcome, the Chuck vs. Randy III could have been billed as a superfight easily, but thats just an example.

This type of fight could also give an oportunity for fighters to match up against fighters from other organizations (if the UFC and other organizations could come to an agreement) in a one match fight. Some that come to mind are chuck vs rampage jackson and Fedor vs arlovski, just to name a couple. These fights wouldnt have to have an impact on each fighters ranking within their respective organization, and wouldnt have to be for either persons title (if they held one). The superfight could be for a seperate belt / title actually.

Ive been thinking about this for a little while and i just figured i'd toss it out to you guys to get your opinions on it. A lot of you are pretty knowlegable about the sport and the fighters and id like to read what you guys think.

Thanks in advance for reading all this, sorry its so long.....

I wish this would happen, but don't see the UFC agreeing to it.

Talking

Can you imagine Joe Silva calling Rampage Jackson "Yeah, we'd like you to fight Chuck Liddell, we'll pay you $2,000/$2,000".....CLICK!!! Then Dana would complain publicly " We tried to get Jackson to fight but he was unreasonable in his monetary demands, He should fight for the love of the sport!"!(Throw in about 7 F-Bombs) LOL

Sergei Kharitonov, uh.. drawing a blank of some of the other confirmed guys PRIDE was willing to send to the UFC but there were more.

i think that something along the lines of the superfight would help facilitate fighters from both venues being able to face each other without the organization having to worry about the losing fighter dropping in marketing value. they just play it off as hey, he fought the only other top ranked fighter in that class and he lost...it happens. i think the fans would absolutely love this. i know i, for one, would go to see a lot of these live if i could in any way afford it.
