Brandon "The Truth" Vera
For me, I like Brandon Vera because he is a hometown fighter right here from Norfolk, VA. He fights out of San Diego, CA, but he was born and raised in Hampton Roads, VA (specifically the City of Norfolk, VA).
That is where I am from as well. It's a Navy town. One of the main highways here is called Military Highway. I have strong family ties to Montreal, Quebec in Canada, which is also why I like GSP so much -- he is a hometown fighter for my French-Canadian family.
Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the world. We also have the USN/USMC Little Creek amphibious assault base. And, we have the USN Oceana Master Jet Airbase with Langley Airforce base only about 30-45 minutes away. Throw in the Norfolk Naval Shipyards and the Newport News Naval Shipyards and you have basically a military town complex.
Brandon Vera is currently 6-0 in MMA, which is a really great start. Lyoto is also 6-0, and has faced better competition than Vera has for the most part. Vera's first four fights were against unimpressive opponents leading up to the fourth fight against Mike Whitehead. His last two fights were against Fabiano Scherner and Justin Eilers. Those were good tests of Vera's skills. Almost all of Vera's fights were KOs or TKOs due to strikes. I like that because Vera is actually really good on the ground as well.
Here is some bio information for those interested.Brandon Vera
Head Muay Thai (kickboxing) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Trainer
Record: 6 - 0 - 0 (Win - Loss - Draw)
Wins: 5 (T) KOs, 1 Decisions
Association: City Boxing
Height: 6'2 (188cm)
Weight: 225lbs (102kg)
City: San Diego
State: California
Country: USA
Brandon Vera is a superior athlete and coach, and has experience in preparing fighters for the most elite levels of competition. Brandon began his training at a very early age, earning a position right out of high school at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. After leaving the OTC, he dedicated his life to the combat arts, and was a two time Pan American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion and an Abu Dahbi World Championship competitor. Simultaneously he pursued his MuayThai career where he became the W.K.A. National Champion and winner of the 2004 K-1 Trials.
Brandon Vera also boasts an undefeated Mixed Martial Arts record and is the reigning WEC Heavyweight Tournament Champion. Brandon is a firm believer in hard work, with a strong emphasis on conditioning, "90% of fights are won on conditioning, my kickboxing classes learn a lot, and will have excellent conditioning as well" And, just for kicks, here is what Brandon Vera said to Joe Rogan after his last KO (kick and knee) of Justin Eilers:
ROGAN: "...talk to us about that fight, give us your impressions of it."
BRANDON: "Man, just came out swinging like a bat out'a hell. Hit him with a one-two, grabbed him in a clinch. Please stop hittin me... Uh, the ref helped me out -- recentered us. Man, I kick him in the head, kneed him the face. Call it a day, baby. Get my check..."
[The crowd loved that and laughed rather loudly, LOL.] I really like this guy. I am impressed by what I have seen. He just got married (announced it in the post-fight part of his win at UFC 57). He looks good in his fights. He is a funny guy. He has as a goal to match the accomplishment that Randy Couture is famous for -- winning HW and LHW titles in the UFC. I think that he is in the UFC to stay and will eventually fight AA. :sport-smi

Darren Jones: "Cool."

I really don't think he's cocky, but knows his future goals and likes to voice them. He's got a lot of spunk and potential as a fighter and I'm excited to see his career unfold.

Yo, Vera is one of my favorite fighters now. He's fighting out of San Diego, which just happens to be where I live, so I gotta support him. He really is the TRUTH. He truly can win titles at both the HW and LHW. Vera vs. Liddel, Vera by KO!!! Vera vs. Arlovski, Vera by KO!!! It can happen...hopefully.

I also thought he was alittle too cocky but now I'm really looking forward to watchng his career. Great fighter. I can't wait to see him at LHW. I definitely think he'll be dominant.
