Big John McCarthy
I don't like Big John McCarthy one bit. He's the main reason I don't like to watch UFC. Your a ref not a fighter yet he acts tough as hell you can tell by the way he talks to the fighters and acts I remeber one guy is coming into the ring hyped doing a little Ortiz jog around the octagon and John just grabs him (physicaly stops him) so he can go over the rules he already knows.
He trys to break up fights all tough guy in **** like trying to throw a fighter off or plow throw the action. He talks with a deep voice and he his hands his hips always trying to be the tough guy, hey if your so tough why not be a fighter John. Just lose the tough attitude because it pisses me off. He just needs drop th attitude and he'll be ok.
Got a poll set up about how you feel about Big John McCarthy.

Come on, would you say Larry Landless was a better ref? Now THAT guy was incompetent when it came to officiating.. Big John just has a little bit of a persona to him but he knows the rules and the dos and donts perfectly.
Mario Yamasaki has had to wrestle fighers away in the same manner, it has nothing to do with the person at hand, but rather by breaking up action by adrenilin raged men by moving them and at the same time not hurting them.. if you ever notice, once they 'throw' they allow the figher to roll OVER them most of the time.. it just seems like more than it is.
If a fighter is disrespecting the officiating, in the official UFC rules, he can actually be kicked out of the fight on the spot. Its all rules, all symantics, all things that MAY not seem like they make any sense but they do.
Plus, McCarthy is a training officer for the LAPD, gotta respect his day job as well as the job he does in the octagon. I would say that all of the current refs do a good job, except for Steve Mazagati, he allows fighters to take too many blows before he calls a TKO when the guy taking the hits is obviously unable to intelligently defend himself.

What do you want him to do? Tap the guy on the shoulder and ask him politely to stop punching the other fighter in the face?

i have always liked John McCarthy. he is a good ref who is always looking out for a fighters safety. there have been a few occasions where i think he may have stopped a fight too soon, but thats way better than waiting too long to stop it. i remember a fight where another ref did'nt see a fighter tapping out while he was being hammered on. the guy took a dozen shots to the head before the ref stepped in. had the ref seen the tap the guy getting pounded would'nt have gotten so messed up. McCarthy has seen it all and is'nt afraid to do what he needs to do to run the Octagon.

Big John is a great ref, the fighters have to know that he is the law in that arena and what he say's goes and his job in there is to keep the action going, but also to keep a fighter from getting hurt really bad, or worse, dead. Now for his tough guy look, he has the right to be, John was a police officer and martial arts instructor for many years, so he has earned to right to be respected and he has protected people on the streets and now in the arena.

I gotta go with everyone else on this one. Big John is one of the best if not the best ref there. What can I say that hasn't already been said though. Read the above posts, I feel the same way as ll those guys.

John McCarthy is absolutely the best. Hes a little rough, but do you want him to be like a wwf or whatever ref that gets thrown around by the fighters. He keeps everyone safe and does his job. And when he waves the fight over, he lets the fighters know that the fight is over, unlike one Ive seen that just stand there and wait for the fighters to break themselves up.Whats his name?Oh yeah, Herb Dean. Im not really impressed with him. one example is the fight of David Terrell vs. Evan Tanner. He waves it of and about a minute later breaks it up. I guess he tries, though.

I haven't really seen anything about his personality that seems way too macho. He is just doing his job by laying down the law. He is very agressive at times, but I look at this as a good thing. If somebody is KO'd on the ground getting his head bashed in, John is quick to make sure that the next punch doesn't land. Sometimes it does look like he "tackles" the fighther for a stoppage, but this also sends the message to the public that the refs are on top of their game and are going to prevent injury or death at whatever measures neccessary.
I would much rather see Big John McCarthy than somebody that stays out of the action or backs down from the fighters. If the UFC is to grow, the refs must be ready to stop fights immediately when a fighter can't intelligently defend himself or when a winner is clearly determined.

Big John is awsome!! I think i'd get a little over excited if I were a ref in the UFC also. I think thats a pretty unfair statement.

Well I respect the police and everything but I have to agree on that if you ever watch the show cops they think theyre superheroes but they never get real rough they need like 4 people for one person and that Dog The Bounty Hunter dude too.But thats a different story I guess(lol).

Big John is probably one of the best refs out there. He has to be tuff. He has to show he's in charge in the ring. Plus, his job as a police training officer probably only adds to his persona. He's a great ref...I get discouraged if he's not in there during one of the big fights.

If anyone has seen ufc 1, then you would know big jon is the best... I mean what kind of referee misses someone who's tapping out on his feet ffs. (that was in the final royce gracie submission over gerard gordeau) also ken shamrock tapped out and the ref didnt see it but gracie let go... he didnt step in when zane frazier was pound on by kevin rosier that fight was stopped becuase the towel was thrown in....... says it all about that ref
Although i do agree that big jon has got it wrong a few times, especially ken shamrock vs tito ortiz.. shamrock was down but not out
