Yes. Penn was always a complete bum. He is only the last person to beat Hughes (something GSP has not been able to do. At least not yet)
He is 27, has many years left if he wants it. He looked like to me that he either gassed or became overconfident after that first round. He need to get his head straight, train hard, come back and make another run. I just hope he doesnt turn out like Belfort.

Penn washed up? Penn is better than GSP. He showed that last night by completely dominating the first round. Penn just lost a fight he thought he deserved, he's gonna be pissed... and he's gonna be running through WW's until he gets to, and beats, GSP - and next time he won't let it go to decision.

Has anyone read or heard anything that would indicate Penn plans to continue figthing in the UFC?

I agree with you Danny, It did seem like Penn either gassed or completely gave up. He was owning GSP with the jabs. Then he kind of went away from it...

Personally, I thought by the end of the first round that we were looking at an early stoppage due to cuts. Penn may have made the same assumption? I don't know.

He may run threw the WW division, but he's going to run straight into another brick wall with GSP!

Wow I can't believe the lack of respect for BJ being showed here. If Georges barely beat a bum last night I guess I was watching a different fight. After Georges beats Hughes then I say let BJ beat up Matt again and then let BJ have a rematch with Georges. That would be sweet.

I doubt he'll play GSP's game next time. Did you see anything in that fight that showed GSP was the better fighter? I think his kicks might be better... next time I'll bet Penn finishes the fight so he doesn't have to rely on judges.

I agree completely. I keep saying that last night's loss is no indication of BJ's power, skill, or ability to dominate the best in the world. Everybody takes a difficult loss some time, even someone as amazing as BJ Penn. Benn tapped Hughes without breaking a sweat, and no one's saying Matt's unworthy to hold that belt.

Yes...he won. Hes a better fighter. To me it looked like Penn was gassed out after he threw some flurries in the first round.
Im not knocking Penn, hes obviously an incredible fighter. But GSP proved himself worthy, why is it so hard to accept it

Accept what?
He didn't win a fight, he won a match. At what point in the match did GSP show his skills to be superior? He won the match because of a bad judging system (mentioned this before about the UFC and the Diaz fights), not because of any show of superiority.

He showed superiority during the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Not by much, but by a clear amount. I obviously am giving the first round to Penn, but deffinetly not 2 and 3.
Match, not fight...sorry for the ignorant comment(not including my above statement)

i wish that the ufc would do what they do in K-1 in a fight / match like this...if the judges think its too close to call or it could litterally go both ways, they just tell them to fight another round. i think something like that would clear up a lot of the arguments about who won what, who dominated who in what part of the fight and so on.....

I disagree. I think Penn did more damage on the ground than GSP, and more damage standing up (at least in the 2nd). Otherwise, GSP had the takedowns and that was the only advantage I saw. However, that and top control count for a lot in the UFC.

The real post fight interview just came up. Penn said he will be looking to fight again for sure.

Yes i blieve the takedowns by GSP made the deciding factor. It was a close fight and i always agree to disagree and respect others thoughts/feelings.
One thing we can agree on is that it was an entertaining match :sport-smi

I figured that since this is such a hot topic, I'd throw my two cents in....
I didn't see the fight, but from what I gathered from you guys and reading the results my first thought was that for the most part, this fight was pretty even. Penn won the 1st and GSP won the 2nd and 3rd, but GSP face was hamburger so I can see why it was a split decesion. The thing that bothers me is that the way some of the people talk they make it seem that Penn is a loser and had no right to fight GSP. I've noticed one thing about this forum, some people don't rely on what they have just watched, but by thier OBVIOUS love affair with a certain fighter. Now I know that we all have our fan favorites and this is definitely an opinion based activity, but I look to some people on this site (Last Exit, Angry Johnny, Danny, Dirty Chuck) for information because they are more knowledgeable about MMA than I am and I respect thier opinion on things. But when someone is obviously blowing a certain fighter just for the sake of blowing them, they lose alot of credibility to me and I assume others like me that come to this forum. Thats my soapbox for the night, anyways....
GSP won the fight and he definitely deserves to fight Matt Hughes and I think he will beat Matt this time. Hopefully Penn can get his head back on straight and get back into the title picture. Both of those guys we saw in that octagon last night are incredible fighters and we should just enjoy watching them before they hang up the gloves. (I miss Randy already!)
GO BABALU!
