Default Kung Fu

Ok, before you think Im an idiot, I dont think that Kung Fu is something that would work well in the UFC.

OK

now, I was watching UFC 2 the other day and noticed a Kung Fu praticioner (sp?) in it. I think he won a fight that wasnt shown on the DVD and then lost his next one.

My question is this. Is Kung Fu completely useless in a fight agains a person that has some fighting skill/knowledge/experience? For years it was billed up as the 'most lethal martial art' thanks to ppl like Bruce Lee. We have seen that that is not the case, BUT Is it an effective fighting style at all? If the 'best' Kung Fu fighter fought the 'middle of the road' competition in the UFC would he compete?

And again, please dont think im asking "is kung fu the best". Im just curious about how legitimate, if at all, it is.

Sure it is. Mainly because "Kung Fu" is about a thousand different martial arts. Some of them are Wushu which is like gymnastics, and some are actual fighting arts that are useful

Is there anybody in MMA that actually uses it as a 'prime' form? What i mean is, Chuck uses kickboxing as his 'prime' form.

and on this topic. There was a 'ninja' that fought in UFC 2. It was funny because during the pre fight interviews it showed him blocking a guys punch and throwning him to the groud and putting him in some kind of weird submition over and over. But for some reason it didnt work in the octagon. lol

Kung Fu can work well in MMA at times. Only fighter in UFC that i know of that uses a form of kungfu is Luke Cummo. I used to take KungFu and I noticed Lukes stance was the Onguard stance. Luke combines his MuayThai with his Kung Fu and BJJ. Bruce Lee didnt use only Kung Fu, he combined thousands of martail arts and created Jeet Kune Do wich has several of KungFu techniques in it.

Chuck uses Kempo Karate as his main form.

Jason Delucia uses Kung Fu.

Cummo uses Thai Kickboxing, not Kung Fu.

Edit: Actually, I think Cummo might've taken some Jeet Kune Do, lemme look into that.

Edit #2: Nope, only see mention of Thai Kickboxing.

Thanks for the heads up on Chuck. I just assumed because I heard he use to be a kickboxer.

Yeah Luke takes Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do(JeetKunedo has LOTS of KungFu in it). The stance Luke uses isnt a Muay Thai stance its a KungFu stance i've taken both.

Oh alright, I thought I remembered he had some history in Jeet Kune Do, but I couldn't find anything about it online.

Do you guys know a link that shows/talks about the different forms and stances in Kung Fu? A frined showed me a book about it years ago and it was very interesting (but that was back when I thought the movie "Blood Sport" was what real martial arts fighing would look like haha)

To me Kung Fu isn't about fighting. It is a life style. It sounds corny, but it is to be one with mind and body. Is it or can it be deadly? Absolutely!!! Depending on the style you study (I studied Hungar); you will learn crippling if not deadly moves (which can not be used in the UFC). Even if they were legal, no one really wants to end someone’s life or career, just to win a fight.

As was already said in this tread, Kung Fu is used in the UFC. Even though their main discipline is not Kung Fu, does not mean they do not use Kung Fu techniques. A lot, if not most other disciplines were derived from one form of Kung Fu or another.

That is the way I feel anyways...

Yes this is true KungFu isnt all about fighting its more about training your mind. Alot of UFC fighters use kungfu meditation techniques to prepare for fights, aligning your body and mind is what they call it.

How do you know they're crippling or deadly? Did you cripple or kill anyone with said techniques?

I know several "life threatening" techniques only to be used under very rare circumstances. An example would be The Dragons Sting-You curl you fingures like a claw and swing it around to the back of your oponents jaw disolocating it instantly. Another example is a neck gouge, you set up for a cross attack but instead of punching you gouge your oponents adams apple. Pretty deadly stuff.

Nice discussion guys. Thanks for the info.

I have a hard time believing all the 'death touch' stuff. But I do remember a video I saw online that had an instructor for a local police department. He was confronting a pimp that was roughing up one of his girls and when the pimp came at him he just 'slapped' the guy on the neck and the guy fell down and couldnt get up. It was crazy. Once the guy had someone help him up he still couldnt walk right. I'll look for the link and post it (if I find it).

the flying monkey boot stomp or the swooping crane fieldgoal kick would be the preferred techniques in this instance......

Well, its more than a 'slap'. But it still knocked him out with one swing.
