Default UFC 59 RECAP (I was in attendance)

first off I want to say I was extremely close to ruining the WW division. I was in the parking lot trying to get some parking, when these 3 dudes in suits are trying to stop traffic. But they arent waiting for traffic to stop for them. They are just jumping out into traffic. Well me being the ******* that I am, I was gonna let that **** slide. So i keep on moving thinking that they wont play chicken with me. Well I was wrong and this MORON in a suit, on a cellphone just walks in front of my car and I slam on the brakes. I get ready to call him something insulting when I notice it was ****ing GSP. I look over at my brother and said oh **** i almost ran over GSP. We laughed and rolled down the window yelled his name, when he turned around we told him to use the crosswalk this is america. How ****ty would that of been, hearing about GSP being out indefinetely because some moron ran him over in the parking lot at the pond in anaheim?

So we get inside and I swear i have never seen more silicone in my whole life. I felt like i was on the set of Baywatch. It was a beautiful view all day long. I swear I usually hate fake titties, but they are grand to look at. Especially between guys kicking the **** out of eachother.

Ok so on to the fights, and for the PPV viewers, you guys really missed the best fights. The prelims were fantastic. It was really on pace to be one of the best UFC' in years until Monson/Cruz and Diaz/Sherk happened. But I will get to that.

Derrick Noble vs Thiago Alves
this fight was a PERFECT start to a great night. These two went at it from the get go. They came out swinging. Noble was connecting with solid leg kicks, and clean combinations. Thiago was wild, throwing wild head kicks, leg kicks, and punches. He looked sloppy. But the fight was entertaining. Noble had Thiago on the cage and was hitting him with some clean shots, to start it off. Then out of nowhere Thiago lands a few punches and drops Noble ending the fight. It almost seemed like it was a lucky punch. But Noble just got over anxious with having Thiago on the cage, and he left himself open. But Thiago showed he has a decent chin, and likes to stand and trade, so I expect to see alot more of him.

Jason Lambert vs Terry Martin
Lambert was impressive. Martin isnt a great fighter, but he seems versatile enough to give alot of fighters trouble. Martin was trying to get takedowns the whole first round, occasionally they would break up and exchange. Nothing to spectacular. Lambert seemed to get the better of those exchanges. Which is why Martin prolly went back to take downs. In the 2nd round Martin ended up on his back and Lambert landed 5 or 6 shots to the side of the head from side mount. Big John stepped in and stopped it.

David Terrell vs Scott Smith
Another good fight, Terrell wanted no part of the stand up game at all. He was looking for the take down right away. After getting the take down he was going for submission after submission. He had a couple of failed arm bars, and finally took Smiths Back and got a rear naked choke in. Terrell looked very dominant on the ground.

Karo Parisyan vs Nick Thompson
Karo came out guns BLAZING. He looked sharp all the way around. He was landing some good takedowns like always, and his ground and pound was vicious. His cardio is amazing. Sure the fight only lasted 1 round. But the amount of pressure he put on Thompson was unbelievable. Nick was on his back and Karo would stand up and fly in with punches, and when in the guard his elbows were devestating. He landed about 4 or 5 in a row, when a cut opened up on Nick's head. Karo then mounted Nick, and kept coming with elbows and punches, Nick was trying his hardest to sweep Karo. But it wasnt happening. Parisyan wanted to prove a point, and he did. After a few more unanswered shots from the mount, Nick gave his back and was hit with a few more shots to the side of the head. Thats when he decided to tap out, NO MAS NO MAS! That was a beating!

Jeff Monson vs Marcio Cruz
well I thought this fight would be good, considering the bad blood between the two. But it turns out my prediction on Monson not being able to handle bigger fighters is true. Cruz gave him problems the whole fight. Neither of which dominated. Monson barely won the stand up, and I think thats only cuz Cruz is so knew to stand up. Monson looked better, but he was just to short, and couldnt really get inside to land anything effective.

Evan Tanner vs Justin Levens
Both Tanner and Levens looked good. But it was clear that Levens wasjust out matched in this one a minute or so into the fight. But he kept on pressing. Even when it went to the ground, and Tanner had him mounted, and landed a few good shots. Levens fought out of it. Tanner even had a triangle on Levens, but Levens slammed out of it, luckily Tanner landed still in good position, he re adjusted, and this time sank it.

Tito Ortiz/ Forrest Griffin
well well well this fight was EXCELLENT. I dont know if it was just alot more exciting for me, cuz the crowd was INSANE. Nobody sat down from the minute Forrest made his entrance to the minute the decision was made. I gotta watch the fight later on tomorrow, to see if you guys at home could tell how insane it was in the building. During the post fight interview, I couldnt hear a word Joe Rogan was saying, which is prolly a good thing.

well now to the fight. The first round Tito PUNISHED Forrest. Man i didnt think Forrest would hold on. He was getting hit with elbow after elbow after elbow. But he never stopped fighting. From his back he was trying to better his position and stayed active the whole time. Tito cut his eye up pretty good that round. I really thought the rest of the fight would go that way. But the 2nd round was all Forrest. Tito couldnt take him down, Forrest had a very Chuck Liddell-esque sprawl, and was man handling Tito. Tito was landing some good shots too. But It seemed as if Tito was gassed, and frustrated after he couldnt get a take down. I gave the 2nd round to Forrest. The 3rd round was it, Neither one could get the edge in the stand up. Forrest would land a good combination, then Tito would. Tito failed a couple more times at take downs. It seemed as if Forrest was gonna be able to pull out a win. Then with 1 minute and 30 seconds left.Tito gets a take down. But he was a bit tired and couldnt capitolize. Forrest was throwing light shots from the bottom, maybe trying to score points. With 25 seconds left, Forrest was able to stand up, and have a couple of more quick exchanges with Tito. Tito ended up winning by split decision. Even though I hate Tito, I think it was a good decision. I think his take down in the 3rd is what sealed it. All in all the best fight of the year so far.

Nick Diaz vs Sean Sherk
another boring boring boring fight. I really like Diaz, and I think he has the tools to be a good fighter. But he lacks aggression. He relies on counters to much. Sherk is a scrappy dude, hes a ****ing spark plug. He has tons of energy and does not **** around. But like Monson lacks the size to compete against these bigger fighters. HE gave Hughes a run for his money, but Hughes is only 5'8". GSP ran right through him, and Sherk couldnt do much damage to Diaz who is bigger than him. All in all sherk was the more aggressive fighter, he landed more on exchanges, he went for take downs more, but Diaz was just to big, and the fight was boring. Sherk thankfully is dropping to 155, where i think he is better suited. His brother happened to be sitting right in front of me and he said that Sherk is getting a title shot at 155 for his next fight. They dont know who against yet. But its damn near final.

Andrei Arlovski vs Tim Sylvia
well WOW! This fight looked to be going the same way as the first fight. Arlovski was getting the better of the exchanges. Sylvia was back pedaling the whole fight. Mostly Countering, and weak counters at that. Then Arloski hit Tim with a BRUTAL shot. Now i knew Tim had a good chin, but his recovery of that punch shows he has an IRON CHIN. Cuz most guys would of been out cold after that punch. Well he gets hit hard and falls on his ass, just like the first fights. Arlovski jumps in and throws a few punches, but instead of going for a heel hook or submission. He tries to punish Sylvia. Well he couldnt hold Sylvia down and Sylvia gets up and htey exchange a bit more.Arlovski thinking that Sylvia is still hurt goes in wrecklessly, trying to end the fight. Tim catches him with a punch that didnt even look that bad. But Arlovski has always had a suspect chin, and tonight it was exposed. He got hit and immediately hit the matt face down. Sylvia gets on top, and when a 6'8" 250 pound man is on top of you your not getting up. From there he landed about 5 unanswered shots to the side of Arlovski's head, and Herb stops the fight. I think all 17,000 people in attendance were in shock.

all in all it was a great night of fights. The prelims were awesome, the fight in the top level sounded like it was good too. I met a few fighters. Sean Sherks brother was sitting in front of us, and got us in to an after party for free. Kimo was sitting about 8 rows behind us. That man is a MONSTER, first thing i thought was how the **** did Royce Gracie's little ass beat him? Karo was a nice guy also, he was walking around the arena after the show was over, signing autographs and taking pictures. I seen about 6 or 7 of the guys from TUF 3. I seen that red headed little bitch that whines about tito not picking him. I wanted to knock his ass out. Bruce Buffer came up and chatted in our section for a minute. Sean Sherk was a nice dude. Half these fighters look alot bigger on TV. Karo was TINY, as was Matt Hughes, Tito. But Titos head is INSANELY BIG.

oh yeah here is a short video I took of Forrest's entrance, and Tito's.

It seems to me that the UFC did a much better job of lighting and imagery around the arena with this event. Maybe it was just that the venue was superior or better designed -- it is an event arena. This may become a model for future events, and I hope that it does. I really liked that this was more of a spectacle then most UFC events.

Even though it was just under 20k in attendance, that place looked packed. I actually like the idea of smaller venues like 20k or less. It may not seem as impressive as 50k or 100k in attendence, but I never liked those types of larger crowds. With smaller venues you see more. You get to be closer to the action. In those big stadiums with 90k crammed in, it is like insane. Anything past the sections closest to the ring or octagon will likely have a crappy view.

All in all, I think that this event was among the best so far this year.

yeah the lighting and sound was on POINT. THE bass was rumbling, you could feel it in ur chest. I am pretty sure a few checks orgasmed from it. I was hoping for them to go back to big entrances with this event. Maybe we will get lucky at Staples Center. I will be at that venue too.
