Old but still interesting -- Baroni previews UFC 59

I get a real kick out of Phil Baroni, and with the damage he's doing in Pride, I think I've pretty much become a fan. I just stumbled on this article he wrote, breaking down the matches in UFC 59. Obviously the card's over now, but he still made some really astute observations, and it's always worth it to hear opinions from someone who's fought some of these guys, and has been where they are now.

I would like to see Baroni back in the UFC. A Baroni/Leben fight would be very interesting.

I know Leben's got a cement block for a chin, but when Baroni's warmed up and in kill mode, his punches are devastating. Look at some of his recent knockouts -- they're like high speed car wrecks. I think Baroni's the guy to put Leben's lights out.

leben/baroni would rule but I'd rather see him go 0-3 vs tanner... hopefully. that was good stuff... good times.

I appreciated how much credit Baroni gave Tanner in the article. It shows how much he's grown up -- the old Baroni would still be talking s**t about Evan, even after two losses.

This is a little bit off topic but Baroni was a guest commentator on Last night HDNet showing of the WEC "Cinco D' Mayhem" card. He was very entertaining to say the least. Here are a couple of his comments (paraphrased of course):

My favorite Baroni line of the night was during one fight the two fighters were in the north/south position and Steven Quatros said, "Phil I know you don't like that north/south position." to which Baroni replied, "Only when it's with my girlfriend"

Another Baroni comment was during the Nathan Diaz fight and he was bragging about the Diaz brothers being true street fighters and not some nerdy school teacher. Kinda sounded like a jab at Rich Franklin to me.

Lastly, Baroni made a comment after Nathan Diaz easily submitted his opponent. Said something like, "Now that he's won the fight he'll probably go out to the parking lot and slit his tires".

Yup,

Looks just like him, acts just like him, and fights very similar to Nick. He's also at Gracie JuJitsu

Yeah but there's nothing like seeing Baroni getting layed out. I miss seeing Baroni getting his ass beat.
