Wow -- that was a really interesting interview, Mepersoner. Thanks for finding it -- I've never seen it before, and it was pretty interesting to hear them talk through their position like that.

Yeah, I agree. I'm actually suprised Pride doesn't have a stance on steroids.
Maybe that says something about their freakishly powerful heavyweights....

I don't know. I started a thread about six months ago begging the question. I was told, by a very unreliable source, that PRIDE fighters are not tested. I only got maybe 4 hits and no information. Is PRIDE tougher on the juice than UFC?

I think those reps for PRIDE in that interview were dancing around the questions. The cultural answers did not impress me at all. I found that to be evasive and non-responsive. Japanese do not use steroids while everyone else does? What kind of BS is that? They said that they do not test, that they do not know who is using, and THEN they try to tell us that no Japanese use them? That is just a lie -- an out-right lie.

Steroids are a prescription drug here too. The only reason for them being illegal in the US is the olympic committee, and our diets here in America cause more damage than steroid usage. Its the misuse and abuse of anything that causes the damage.

I don't think that is the case at all really. They never said "no Japanese use them" they just said it is not as big of an issue in Japan. They may be right. Steroids is a big issue in the US. That is obvious and not an out-right lie at all. Also it is a cultural thing. Why should they test for something that is not illegal? Is that right? Probably not but they have their way of doing things and the US has theirs. Like it has been noted before it's the abuse of steroids that should be the issue.
On an interesting side note I notice some people say that steroids are such a terrible thing for the sport but then say on a different occasion (say..defending their favorite fighter that has been caught using) that steroids don't make a better fighter or that he just wanted a six pack. If that's the case why should anyone care?

You and I both know that steroid use is prevailant all over the world. Japan is NO exception -- not at all. The cultural BS does not impress me or pesuade me in any way. Those guys actually tried to say there is no evidence that steroids improve athletic ability in regard to whether or not it actually helps a fighters win matches (HELLO! Phil Baroni ring any bells?). I just think that PRIDE is saying that they do use steroids and no one can stop it... Except when they want fights held in America.
We have all been wondering why PRIDE has not migrated to the US to hold events. This is a key reason, IMO. They have all the money, right? So money is not the issue. They have all the best fighters, right? So, talent is not an issue. Travel? Meaningless to PRIDE, or so I have been told for at least two years. Rules? PRIDE rules are no so very different from the UFC. PRIDE could easily adapt. I think that without steroids we will not see the PRIDE that we want to see... That is a reason why they answer with spin answers.

It doesn't matter if they test anyway close to the fight anyway. They test bodybuilders after they win an event and they come back negative. All you have to do is know the clearance time and stop using them in enough time to pass the test. Some fighters fight once per year, so on the juice for 10 months, off for two before a fight!

Yep. That's what I've always been told, and it's supported by an interview on T-Nation with an "anonymous" strength trainer who works with fighters -- 90% of MMA fighters are juiced, but they know when to cycle off so they're clean by the time they get tested. It's only on rare occasions, like with Sylvia and Barnett, that someone screws up and gets caught.

T-Nation is awesome! I use very few supplements but what I do use comes from Biotest.
