Fixed fight or on the level?
Someone brought up the idea that Royce may have possibly been paid so much money to lose to Hughes. The way I see it is Royce would have done the Gracie name so much good with a win. I don't see how he would willingly do that to the reputation of the Gracie name. Perhaps they kept raising the price until he could no longer refuse.
I really don't like to think that any of this could be true, and in the end I don't. I think Royce was just outmatched against Hughes. However, with the way the UFC often protects certain fighters, some recent dubious judges' decisions (may be fixed or just bad judging), and how much a Hughes win would show the growth of MMA... I cannot entirely dismiss that Royce may have been paid off.
Hence the poll...

I have to agree... any other fighter it may have been a different story, but Royce has too much pride, and has the Gracie name to uphold. I was surprised at the lack of intensity he showed although this may be just him being calm and relaxed.

it's a very interesting thought i must admit and a good point about that there does seem to be some fighters that are protected bye the powers that be in the ufc but as far as the gracie and matt fight i just don't want to believe he got paid off but the thought is still there that 1.5mil is alot of $$$ for 1 fight

Wouldn't he have tapped to the armbar before his elbow popped then?
Hughes beat him, simple as that

this has already been discussed and put to rest... if the UFC paid anyone to lose, the UFC would be over... why would they care if hughes loses to gracie... it was a good fight for them and it WASNT a decision!! if you wanna argue that the decision is pushed on way by the UFC fine, but for royce to get TKOed in the first round and say it was fixed is pointless

Like i said in my thread on here in responce to another person entertaining this non-sense: You guys need to man-up and just accept the cold truth that Royce just was not good enough and lost. No shallow excuses here...
Matt is the most dominent WW champ ever for a reason, he is just THAT good and royce probabley had little clue as to the kinda fight he was in for.

Yeah Royce should have quit while he was still ahead. Now the "Invincible" legend that is royce Gracie has been shattered to peices. Well he's still a legend, but the Invincible part is long gone.
Kinda weird actually. It would be like Bruce Lee being magically brought back to life in his prime, stepping into the UFC and *GASP*...LOSING! When for years Bruce lee had been thought of as some godly kung fu badass that could not be beaten. Pretty shocking to many i'd imagine LOL

Royce had been many peoples santa, the truth is that no man is invincible. How many mma fights has Royce had in the last 10 years. I hope the rest of the Gracie family are gonna show us how GJJ rules and come avenge their families loss, maybe against, GSP, or RC, or CL, or another one of the UFC's best. Don't hold your breath too long cause if they believed their own hype they would have been competing all along in a venue who would have loved to have them their. If you realley think Royce took a fall you need to check yourself into treatment because your denial is outa control.

I was reading about the new generation of Gracies in one of the pre fight hype articles on UFC, and I think it would be fantastic if a younger Gracie would come in and compete, the Gracies could adapt their system to the new style and try to push a new name. It would be entertaining at the very least

Crosley Gracie. Watch out for him. I don't know what he's been up to lately, it's been a while since he's competed. But the guy subbed "Mach" and that's no easy feat since he is the only fighter to do it.

ok did I log into the wrong forum or something, this place suddenly looks like Sherdog or MMAweekly forums with all the conspiracy theories.
Gracie got beat plain and simple by a better fighter right now. Maybe 10 years ago it would have been different but like others have said MMA is totally different now and Hughes is pretty close to a total package, while Gracie has not changed with the times.
Throwing a fight by a Royce... you have got to be kidding.

Thats crazy to think that Royce would have thrown a fight for money. His family's pride has no price. Royce got beat by the Welter Weight Champion of the World in the UFC of today. No surprise........ They won't p--- away 65 years of family history for any amount of money. No doubt about it!!

What about Babalu and Penn. I know they're not Gracies but didn't they train heavily with them.

i think thats terrible.. no way would a fighter of the calibre of Royce throw a fight, why would he.. he makes so much money in pride and endorsements he doesnt need to. theres no ned for excuses he was out matched by a superior champ.

He was up against MATT HUGHES. Most others would have sucked on the mat against such a fighter too.
Accept it gracie just was not good enough, and any gameplan he had going into the match came crashing down, when faced with the realization of what a MONSTER MAtt hughes is in the cage.

i just went for a long bath and thought about this.. ( think time.) ha ha
right, royce gracie fought akebono 400+ lbs and won via submission, i know matt hughes is strong but stonger than 400lb guy? gracies victory there was excellent, of course hughes is great i acept that.i though gracie did nothing on his back, for a famed jui jitsu artist he looked out of his depth. As i have said b4 in his alst 3 fights he hasnt been hit. so whay did he take such a beating?
i have seen many fighters get emotional after a fight, but gracie was in bad shape. was it a recognition that he doesnt have it anymore or is it that he ha dsomething on his mind. for a high ranked opponent in pride, the heavier man and legend that he is.. it doesnt make sense.
i wouldnt be as bold to say that the fight was fixed but i certainly dont think the real Royce Gracie turned up. if he did then well done Matt Hughes you are indeed the man
