Photo of Franklin and Loiseau after their fight.
I hadn't seen this pic before today. Damn. I forgot how banged up Loiseau actually looked.

Wow! that's a good pic! So you want to be a MMA fighter?! This is what a lot of people don't see, the hospital trips after some fights, broke bones, etc. That's why all these fighters have my upmost respect!

I think it's awesome that fighters can go in to the octagon, do their job, and then be friendly after the fact. That pic of Ace and the Crow should be put on the UFC site and used against the UFC haters who think the sport is barbaric. I am tired of getting into arguments with people who think the sport is a bunch of gorilla's beating eachother for fun. When I tell people that these guys were teachers and businessmen and now do what they love it changes some minds but damn I hate the haters!!!

I'm a little uneasy with that statement. I've heard it a few times before, the last time I think was from Dana White. While there are a few fighters who've given up law school, and a couple are schoolteachers and whatever, I don't really believe that the average education of a UFC fighter is high compared to most pro sports, where a lot of the athletes came up through the college system. I wouldn't think the average education level in MMA would be significantly different than pro boxing.

This comes down to awkward discussions of race/demographic, and how over the last few decades amateur boxing's been relegated to ghettos and community centres and police athletic leagues, so a lot of kids coming up in the sport are from poorer neighborhoods and have turned to boxing as an alternative to crime -- or dreams of the NBA, where it's even harder to actually distinguish yourself and get anywhere near those dreams.
MMA, on the other hand, is drawing from traditional martial arts, which is still more the domain of white suburban kids. There's a bling factor to boxing and a strong hip-hop connection that MMA doesn't have as much.
Case in point -- look at the percentage of world titles in MMA held by white guys, versus the number of white champions in boxing.
Now, I'd be annoyed by the direct statement that white=educated and black=uneducated, because that's a sweeping generalization. But because of the vicious cycle of crime and poverty in the ghettos of America, the people living in them are at a disadvantage compared to the people living in more affluent neighborhoods, in terms of being able to secure a solid university education.
Whew -- have I made it through without sounding like a racist? 'Cause that's the last thing I'd want to be labelled as.

OK, probably pro boxing is a bad comparator. But what about MMA vs football, hockey, basketball, baseball or soccer. I wouldn't think the level of education or achievement is exceptional compared to those sports.

Ya poor David, that was a rough night for him. I actually wonder if in his next fight, he will be afraid to stand up with his opponent based on his Franklin fight. He respects other opponents stand up to much tho in matches. I've seen some toher fghts of his against strikers and he wants to wrestle in those fights. I like David and I am going to be excited to see him fight someone again.

He's in a weird situation now, though, because even if he continues to do well against the rest of the division, it seems like the question of Loiseau-Franklin has been settled. It's not like it was a sudden knockout or a stoppage due to cuts. Franklin chased him around and around the octagon and POUNDED him like dough. So if Loiseau fights his way to the #1 Contender spot, will the UFC want to bother promoting a rematch? Would you bet on The Crow for that fight?

Hey who's on his back in that photo! Maybe he is tired from chasing Loiseau all over the ring
Seriously, I think that this particular match is a perfect reason to curb the massive weight cutting guys like Franklin do. I would like to know what the actual fight time weights were.
Franklin is just too damn huge, if Loiseau was the number one contender and got beat down like that, there is something wrong with the MW division.

I would assume that Franklin weighed 200 lbs on fight day, because he said he cuts to 200 about two weeks before a fight and then drops to 185 just for the weigh in.
I agree about the cutting. Weigh-in should be two hours before the fight.

During the fight, Rogan quoted Franklin as saying he enters the cage on the evening of the fight at about 205, so that's 20 lbs he puts back on in 24 hours. I don't know what Loiseau came in at, but I doubt it was much less. He's a pretty big guy too.

I have no clue, but Rich looked a lot bigger to me. Could be perspective or how Rich carries himself.

Me too. I have a really hard time picking a winner in that matchup, but I'd love to see it. When the subject comes up on the UG, the majority seem to give it to Franklin because he does pretty much everything well.
I really need to see Rich get tested in his upcoming fights, because I still have yet to see a limit to how good he actually is (the Machida fight notwithstanding, because that was a while ago and, like Liddell, I think Franklin learned a lot from his last loss and only got better). He's a beast and I want to see someone really put him to the test.

Rich is really a special case considering he got a MS in education, taught some high school and whooped ass in the ufc. He seems like a nice guy and down to earth. I doubt many other mma fighters snap pictures with their opponents in the hospital afterwards. I KNOW tito and shamrock ain't going to snapping photos after ufc 61.
why don't liddell and rich fight at 195 for show? that way, there is nothing to lose but ego...
remember when donovan bailey and michael johnson were at their primes and they raced at 150meters? that was a tight race, too bad mike pulled his hammy.
