In general, I don't know why people get so excited about heavyweight fights. Look at the HW matchups in the past year (especially in the UFC). Which one was a particularly exciting fight? In general, they're a lot of hype and either a flash KO or a few rounds of gassed-out giants getting yelled at by the ref to get busy.
In boxing and MMA, exciting fights come from well-conditioned athletes who can stay busy and push a solid pace throughout, and that's rarely what you see from the 240 lb'ers.

I'm excited about any fight that Brandon Vera is in.

True. He's pretty active in there. Vera-Arlovski might be fun.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
I have faith in him for one more fight. After that, I'm done with him if he doesn't bring a little heart and conditioning into the fight.
And guys, the Mir/Christison fight wasn't nearly as painful to watch as Jordan/Gonzaga from UFC 56. That was by far the worst fight I've seen in my UFC days (other than the KO in the last half-minute or so).

Well, he seems like one who hasn't really had to count on cardio to wipe out everyone with his submissions. He was gassing like hell when Wes Simms took him a while - who else took him any time? Looking at his history on the ufc site it looks like he hasn't ever gone past the 1st round, win or lose. - except the marathon with Wes Simms, 4:21 into the 2nd round.

Omg yes. I don't remember whose corner it was, but after the second round they were like "If you ever want to fight again you need to DO SOMETHING!" I agree that's the worst fight i've ever seen. I'll take controversy over a tea party any day.

Mir looked bad and was IMO given the fight. Yet another very bad decision by the judges.

For what it's worth, I just re-watched the fight of Mir and Christinson, and I do believe the fight was ruled properly. Mir won 1 and 3 and Christison won the 2nd. I think Christison getting the armbar attempt made me overlook the initial fact that Mir dominated the first part of the first round. He did just enough. Still, what an awful boring fight.

couldnt agree more. one of the reasons i liked mir was that he fought with the finesse of a a ww. technically he may be the most talented hw in ufc. means nothing if you show up in the shape he was in. not a new story either. he seemed to lack conditioning before his accident.

Yeah, I just watched a replay of Frank's fight with Tank the other night. What a totally different Frank Mir.

Who will fight Sylvia after Monson? I think they were hoping for a Mir rematch but like this..? He's gotta show something - I mean do you think they would put him in with Sylvia? Maybe another fight and do some running!!

The Tim Sylvia that we have seen in the last year would likely KO the Frank Mir that we saw at UFC-61. I think that Tim Sylvia would be laughing at the idea of a rematch. Mir-Sylvia 2 seems like a bad joke right about now.

He's got a good journal entry on his site.
http://frankmir.com/franksjournal.cfm
At the end of recent entry:
"I will continue to get better and back to the Frank Mir that many of you say that you do not recognize at this time. In fact, you will see, in time, a more lethal, more dangerous, more dominating, more intimidating Mir than ever before. It's not going to happen over night. But it is going to happen."

I hope that is true, because he looked like flabby man in that last match. It was hard to watch him. He needs to get back down to 240 pounds and in much better conditioning.

I know a lot of people say he should either run more or do something to get back in better cardio shape. Having been someone that has had a major leg injury, I know how painful and how hard it is to get back out and run even after rehab and strength training. That may be the case with Mir, especially with how large he is. He's not exactly twinkle-toes anymore. If thats the case and he doesnt work on cardio due to pain, then he might need to find an alternative type of excercise or get his leg checked out again by the doctor. Im not saying that is his reason or his excuse, I'm just throwing out a possibility.

I agree. He may not be able to train the way that he would want to given his recovery from that accident. His legs did seem more mobile and more of a help to Mir against Christensen then they were against Pe de Pano. When Mir fought Cruz, Mir's left leg seemed to not want to do what he wanted. A few times it seemed like Mir could not position his hips or get his left leg to move right for a triangle. Mir may have looked floabby, but he did actually move and fight much better at UFC-61 than he did earlier in the year.

I've had major leg injuries too and it takes a while to get back up to par, but with him being an elite athlete he needs to find a way to get back in shape, like you said. You just can't go into mma unconditioned and expect to make an impact, no matter how good you are. He should try an eliptical trainer...they're no impact, if it's bugging him with cardio.

I really think it was a lack of motivation. I think after the his last fight, he realizes that he needs to step it up to get to pre-accident form. At least I hope so.

The accident may've had something to do with it, but personally, I think Frank just looked past and took this last guy way too lightly.
