Kenny Florian is willing to fight Fedor
... as long as Fedor drops down to 155.
This is a good interview/update on Florian from over at MMAweekly.com. Apparently he wanted to clear up the rumours we've all heard relating to turning down the title shot against Sherk.

I would be careful about sayin such things about Fedor. he might just do it, then Ken would have some full contact fighter shorts full of u know what.

Interesting. We all admire the guys who step up and take a fight on short notice, but obviously not everyone is comfortable doing that. The same rumour about Hominick may be true as well. I wonder who'll get the dubious pleasure of fighting Sherk for the belt? Maybe Fisher? He stepped in for Ken-Flo once before.

Great find, thanks. I don't blame Florian for turning down the fight. In that situation he is almost guaranteed to loss. Sherk is way too skilled and experience to go agains illprepared. Why lose a title fight and have to start from square one? Great move in my opinion. i hope they just push back the fight so we don't see Sherk run over someone who took the fight on short notice.

fedor can certainly drop to 155 after he loses that gut, baby fat, his legs and his left arm... he can prolly still KO ken-flo with his right fist....

I can definitely see how stepping in on short notice even if it'll probably result in a loss is a good thing. For Fischer, all it did was put him in better standing with the UFC, didn't really affect his "ranking" much(of course there is no official ranking system, if there was one this might be different). With KenFlo, this is a title shot and a loss to Sherk will result in injury and then Kenny has a longer road until his next shot at the title so it makes alot of sense for him to not accept the fight without ample time to prepare.

So this leads to another question.....who should Sherk fight now? Personally I don't think Sherk should automatically get a shot, but since that seems to be what's going to happen, who should the UFC replace Florian with?

Is Pulver as good as he was? No slight intended, I just want to hear from people who know more than what I can read into his record.

Sure he is. Possibly better, because he was just saying after a recent win that he's only starting to remember that this is MMA and not boxing, and he needs to do more than just go in and throw leather. So apparently he's been working on the other aspects of his game more than he has in the last year or two. His new well-roundedness was evident in his win over Kenji Arai at Bushido 10, where instead of knocking him out with a punch, he knocked him out by soccer-kicking him in the head.

Whoever gets into the octagon with Pulver next should keep reminding him that soccer kicks to the head are illegal. Every clinch.... "Remember Jens, no soccer kicks."
How do you see him matching up against Sherk?

It's hard to say. I feel like I need to see Sherk fight at least once at LW so I can see how dropping all that weight affects him. Sherk's never knocked anyone out cold, but he's definitely won fights due to a TKO stoppage. I'd definitely give him the edge as a wrestler. Pulver's knocked guys out, but he's also been knocked out (Sherk hasn't).
Cardio's rarely an issue at LW, since most of these guys are in top shape with no pudge at all. I can see Sherk wanting to trade punches with Jens, but he'll also be looking for the takedown (especially with Jens being such a skilled boxer).
I kind of give it to Sherk, but again -- that's without ever seeing him fight at 155.

When Rashad and Joe Stevenson moved down a weight class, I noticed that they looked much leaner at the lighter weight class. When I think of Sherk at 170, he already looks pretty lean. I can't imagine him cutting 15lbs, does anyone know what his natural weight is?

These MMA fighters have an uncanny ability to move up and down weight classes. Look at BJ Penn and Joe Riggs. Couture was saying when he first met Josh Burkman, Burkman fought at 205. Now he's 170.
I'm in good shape at 225, and I'm cut when I'm down around 200. The idea of dropping another 30 lbs on top of that and being anything other than feeble and emaciated seems impossible, but the sport is full of examples to the contrary.

Can't some of these guys actually weigh more than what they're fighting at? I recall cutting can consist of losing water weight, as well as burning fat, sweating off as much as possible. Like Bobby Southworth, yeah, I know, him again, dropping from the 220s in about a day to make weight for his fight. Wouldn't he be back to his 220ish weight after replenishing the water for the fight?

Absolutely. The weigh-in is 24 hours in advance, and as long as you make weight when you step on the scale, you can weigh whatever you want at fight time. It's a screwy balance of starving and dehydrating yourself to get as light as possible, while not actually doing any damage to your health/energy stores that will still affect you by the next night.

I can't remember what Sean said in an interview I heard with him talking about the cut but he said he has to eat A LOT just to maintain the weight to stay around the WW limit. I don't think he is going to have as much trouble as a lot of people think. So many people are into this cutting 20-30 pounds before weigh-ins that they think everyone does it. It's not always the case.
