And it will be hard to accept, when he does it again.

Matt Hughes has said all along he underestimated BJ Penn. It's not hard to accept that as a reality. It was Penn's first fight as a WW and i'm sure Hughes expected to power right through him. Penn put on a great performance, i'm not trying to take anything away from him. I just don't see it happening again.

I agree with you RockemSockem. I think Matt will Steam Roll BJ Penn this time around. Matt's 5x's the fighter he was the first time they fought, and he's got motivation.

I am not happy about this, but it is better that George fights Matt at 100%. I realy hope that Matt wins, and BJ loses, he hasnt realy earned atitle shot, plus I would rather see GSP vs Hughes for a title opposed to for no title. They really shouldn't treat GSP like Karo, GSP has earned it and been way overdue for a title shot, more then Karo, so GSP should get a tune up fight in October if he is like 80% ready, against an easier opponent, then he can take on hopefuly Matt around UFC 65 or 66. Really hope that GSP can fight Hughes for round 2, Im way to stoked for that fight, opposed to a non title fight with Hughes n GSP or GSP vs Penn2.

Right after the fight Hughes told BJ "I didn't underestimate you".

Now, I don't know if you're referring to something Hughes has said before or after the fight.
If you mean something he said before
- it was hype/trashtalk
if after
- it was an excuse.

Simple.

Good point, SM. Matt's better than ever, but I don't think BJ is.

But is Matt better at wrestling? His improvement elsewhere doesn't really matter, cos BJ will still be better at striking and submissions.

Excuse is just the word online kids hide behind anytime someone admits to making a mistake. I don't know how you haven't heard this reference before because i've heard Hughes, Dana White and BJ Penn all say that Hughes underestimated him.

I wonder if BJ wins again, will he try to make out with Hughes in the victory celebration. That was hilarious.

hughes has improved so much in his subs and sub defense. Back when he fought bj he really got by on pure atlethic skill and ground and pound. Bj has stayed the same or even gotten worse. He really has fought the same opponents that matt has. I say bj fatigues after the first round. Matt will not steam roll bj. Bj has never been beaten up but he will lose. Bj has yet to show me the fighter he once was a few yrs ago.

matt has been dominent lately... but against who???? no world class competition at all... royce, over the hill... riggs, totally unprepared... trigg, also over the hill and no match.... bottom line is hughes hasnt put his belt on the line since ufc 52.. thats a LONG time ago... combine that with an avg BJ penn, it could be a war... and an avg BJ penn is better then almost anyone.... (except GSP) should be a great matchup, impossible to call

This may be Penn's only chance at the UFC WW belt. Title shots are hard to come by, and require good luck as well as skill. A couple of years can slip by pretty easily. I think Penn will be focused on this fight, as much he's focused on anything in his career. The big question is, has he had sufficient time to get his cardio up? Because as far as fighting skills, I think he has the edge.

Matt is going to destroy Penn. If GSP can take Penn down and GNP him it will be easy for Hughes. Penn was in horrible shape against GSP and that's why he lost, and unless he shows up in great shape against Hughes he won't have a chance, because he won't finish him, and Penn's cardio is not ready to go five rounds against someone as relentless as Hughes. Most people pick fights based on ability I throw in conditioning in there because in the later rounds if you're tired your skill goes to crap, trust me I know personally.

LOL@"destroy Penn".

GSP had serious trouble taking BJ down. And when he did, he couldn't really do any damage.
What makes you so sure Hughes has so much better takedowns than GSP? GSP is way more explosive than Hughes, you should watch his fights against Trigg&Sherk.

I don't think it was a "He got destroyed" fight the first time and I also don't think Penn was "so much better" in the first fight.
I do think Hughes underestimated Penn and it ended the way it did.
Both Penn and Hughes are better now and it will make for a great fight Hughes should want this fight due to the loss he had before and Penn should want this fight to show that he is a real champion, both of which will make it a great fight...

I dont think Penn will gas in 5 rounds if he fights Matt. It wil be a lot closer of a match between these 2 then the first. He may look out of shape, but Penn is a natural 155lb fighter when he is excellent condition, now he has to stya at 170 so he needs to put on some weight in any real way. Penn had great submissions from the bottom, and Hughes has great control and gnp on top, so it should be an interesting match up. I hope Matt wins so we can see a title fight between Matt and GSP, but if Penn wins, I see GSP fighting Matt for no title, and the winner rematching Penn.
