I was a bit worried about Penn's level of conditioning when I first read this as well but looking back on Penn's last few fights...its seemed like his heart just wasnt in the fights. I think that if he is really interested in fighting and is in a place he needs to be mentally, that that is better for him that what he is calling "professional training". If he comes in and is ready to throw down and is enjoying himself again, then Id bet on Penn all day long to take this fight.

Fighting is hard, but fun? That rings of a fighter that really never had a decent perspective on MMA and combat sports. Penn has lost two out of his last four, so I guess he has not been having any fun. You guys think that he will find his "fun" center in a match with the most dominant welterwight on the planet? Doesn't Penn know that Hughes comes into every match like it is a title fight and he is the contender regardless of the fact that Hughes is the champion? Hughes is not playing some school yard game with kids to have fun. Hughes is there to destroy Baby Jay Penn, not play patty cakes.

When I read his interviews, I was so far from less than impressed that I cannot think of a lower thing to say about those foolish comments from Penn. Is it a game? Is he really doing the opposite of what he said? I doubt that severely. Penn actually believes all that nonesense. Tonight, all the Penn fans will see the writing on the wall when Penn loses in dramatic fashion
Hmm, Hughes has not KO-slammed anyone lately, maybe tonight Penn gets dropped on his head...

It's the way he talks man. I guess he sounded like a scared school girl the first time too?
Matt Hughes had the more convincing "hype-talk" the last time too. Luckily, that doesn't mean **** in the ring.
Tonight, Matt Hughes=deer in headlights (again)

I am not trying to joke on him for the way he sounds. It is just that they show that promo a lot and each time I detect a hint of fear and doubt in his voice. I guess it is just me, but that is how I feel when I hear Penn talk about this match -- especially in THAT promo. Tonight, when they play all that promo BS before the fight, I will be listening very closely to Penn. Sure, it is not words or inflection that wins a fight, but it shows where Penn's head is really at in this fight.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but to me he sounded exactly the same the last time around.
"If I feel like, now's the time to put him away, I'll put him away right there" etc. sounded just the same to me.
He's not good "on the mic" (neither is Tito btw, all you Tito-fans), but it doesn't matter.

Anyway, a countdown-clock anyone?

Hey Gooner, check out the official UFC 63 site for a countdown:
http://63.ufc.com/
Edit: I think the countdown is the amount of time left until the prelims start. The main event starts at 10 est time.

Yeah Matt Hughes is strong, but he wont be able to submit him. I think he will have to try ground and pound, and before he is able to get to that position i think BJ will have had several chances to pull something out of his sleeve.

No doubt BJ has the skills to pull it out. But the way I see it, if you add up the skills both men have and the amount of conditioning both men have I'd give the edge to Hughes. Dan Gable said it well, "the first round goes to the best technician, the second to the one with the best conditioning, and the third round goes to the one with the most heart. And I'd have to give the later two to Hughes I see Penn winning the first round or the first round being very close, the second round being very close or Matt Hughes pullin out a narrow decision and from then on it's all Hughes.
Now this prediction is saying that the fight doesn't end by stoppage, which IMO both fighters have the ability to pull that off.

That is a great quote. Do you mind if I make it my signature?

Yeah, i totally agree with you. I doubt BJ's conditioning can match up Hughess' conditioning. And yes, could use that one as a sig. Great quote.

Penn will take it. He's coming into this match ready to go 5 rounds. No one can survive a well condtioned Penn.

I was in Wal-Mart today and decided that in order to pass the time before 63 I would buy a few DVDs.
I purchased UFC 47,48,49,50 all for 20$.Sweet deal.
I got to tell you that I was watching 48 and Hughes was totally neutralized on the ground by Charuto.Charuto locked in a about 3 or 4 triangles and was mildly succesful at other submission attempts.Hughes basically LNPed his way to victory.
BJ is far superior on the ground and will throw up numerous sub attempts, sweeps, and also find a way to scramble to his feet.
I'm thinking it will be either a super boring decision for Hughes,or an exciting all out grappling war with BJ coming out on top.
I am extremely excited, and I don't even care who wins anymore.

I don't think the Penn we saw against St. Pierre was the real BJ. His conditioning will be better this time and he's coming to fight. That being said, unless Hughes sticks his neck into another sub BJ will still lose. I'll say Matt by unanimous decision or GNP stoppage. I don't believe he'll ever sub BJ.

I think that the only question is whether Penn is going to decide to beat Hughes or embarrass him. Penn may decide to really embarrass Hughes and beat him about the face throughout the entire match before putting him to sleep with a choke. This could be very embarrasing for Hughes.

I guess Penn was the one that got embarrased, haha. No seriously I haven't been able to watch it b/c I just got off of work. But what did I say (read my quotes before) KK u shouldn't put ur marbles into one basket, it is a fight.

BJ Penn is done. Stick a fork in him. I said that Penn would not beat Hughes, and it feels so damn good to be right. Penn gassed out in the first two rounds, and then Hughes picked Penn apart like he was the most awesome country breakfast that Hughes had ever seen. Penn stood like a statue as Hughes actually out-boxed Penn and used striking to finish Penn off. It was the sweetest win I have seen in a long while. I actually jumped up and down for five minutes after they announced the winner!

Penn didnt want it bad enough. He was beating Hughes badly in both rounds 1 and 2 and then was done. Hughes won that fight on conditioning and conditioning alone. He deserved that win as bad as I hate to it.

Oh Yeah!! I told you guys Penn could not compare to the MONSTER Hughs had become, and that the past loss did not mean squatt *TODAY*.
And last night Matt brought those points home, and shut up a cocky Penn.
Wooooooo!!!

Goddamnit.
Well, I was wrong.
Hughes won that fight on cardio, and cardio alone though.(Edit: damn, Jras0001, you already said that) BJ should really train more professionally, cos he's crazy talented.
He is still the man for me. How can you not be impressed with a 166 pound guy stuffing the takedowns of a great 190 pound wrestler, and pushing him around for 2 rounds?
Not a fan of Hughes, but gotta give it up to him too. He has heart, we've seen that before too.
GSP will beat him though. He's about the same level with BJ, but he won't gas after 2 rounds. There's the difference.
