Penn has lost two out of his last four matches by decsions. He gassed out. His stand-up game is not excellent. It is not even well established. At least, not any longer. He has not had a (T)KO since 2002. Liddell is a striker. Liddell has serious stand-up. Liddell has (T)KO'd every opponent since 2002. THAT is a great striker. Penn has had to rely on his ground game a lot. It takes great conditioning to be a great ground fighter. Penn lacks the conditioning.
IMO, Penn even sounds like he is already beaten in his interviews and such at UFC-62. I think that he is milking his career for a few more big paydays before he retires. I cannot see him beating Matt Hughes. Anyone that looks at Hughes and then says what Penn said in the quote in this thread has got to be messed up in the head.

Penn says he gave up professional training but will show up to the fight in shape?

What the hell are you talking about?
Edit: Oh right, when he didn't get TKO'd himself.

Yes, he lost two decisions. He lost them to GSP - possibly the #1 welterweight - in his return fight after 7 months of no fighting. And Ryoto Machida - a light heavyweight WHO KO'D RICH FRANKLIN. You're right, that makes BJ Penn pretty much crap.
BJ's stand-up is very good. Especially when you compare it to Hughes's. I wonder how Hughes would have done against Machida...

So "when I heard this fight was gonna happen... tears started coming, I'm gonna be the champion again" sounds like he's already beaten?

Good one! That fight was amazing. A little guy chasing the big guy all over the ring. No shame in losing that match for sure. What a warrior he is.

After he beats Penn, he won't need the time. He'll have BJ up every morning to cook his country breakfest for him.
Hughes by submission or GnP.

I'm sold.Gooner actually made some great points.Matt just seems outmatched in every way.
-His stand up is inferior.
-His sub game has vastly improved but it's still not up to par with BJ's.
-BJ is tough as hell to takedown,Couture said even he had problems.
-BJ has never been finished by anyone.
-He dealt Matt his worst defeat ever,so he probably has a mental edge.
BJ by Hawaiian dinner.

BJ is gonna dominate him again... he's motivated now. And he knows that it's likely the judges will consist of 3 randomly selected members of the Matt Hughes Fan Club... so BJ knows he has to finish. Maybe it'll even hit round 2 this time.. nahhhhhhh.
Submission is most likely but i'm seeing BJ by TKO:sport-smi
Take alot of pics with the family and belt the next few weeks, Matt!

Live by the KO, die by the KO. Yes, I meant that all of Liddell's wins were KO's or TKO's. In the last four years, Liddell has been a serious, dangerous striker. That cannot be denied. When you talk about stand-up, then Liddell is at the top of that food chain. BJ Penn has not had a KO or TKO since 2002. That is not the sign of a great striker. Only a great striker is going to get a KO in the first round of almost every match.

You missed the point. Penn is 2-2 in his last four matches. If he were a great striker, then things would be different. Penn might have won all four of those matches, if his conditioning were superior. Instead he was all over the place in his weight classes for those fights. He did not have the stamina to beat GSP. I just cannot see Penn beating Hughes outside of some incredibly lucky fluke type stuff.

I think that these results are funny.Hughes by TKO/KO 17 30.36%
Hughes by Submission 9 16.07%
Hughes by Decision 9 16.07%
Penn by TKO/KO 5 8.93%
Penn by Submission 14 25.00%
Penn by Decision 1 1.79%
Draw 1 1.79% It seems that people are split between Hughes getting a TKO/KO (which is weird, IMO) and Penn getting a submission. Still, it seems that 66.50% agree that Matt Hughes will win.

Just remember, that Matt would be 2-2 against those same opponents too. And would have possibly gotten KTFO by Machida.:sport-smi

As a matter of fact, that match was the main event on UFC Unleashed last night. The more I watch that fight, the more clear it is that GSP won that fight BIG TIME. Penn barely won round one. But, GSP clearly won rounds two and three. Penn gassed out near the end of the first round. He was fairly ineffective after that.

That is BS. With GSP, we already KNOW that Matt Hughes can beat GSP. Why? Because Matt Hughes already has defeated GSP. Guess what? BJ Penn lost to GSP. And, Penn was not acting very smartly when he took that match against Lyoto. Ryoto Machida is a heavyweight. He is a big guy and he handled Penn easily. Why would Matt Hughes fight Lyoto? It would never happen. And, if you think that Renzo or Roderigo Gracie would easily defeat Matt Hughes, then I have two words for you: "Royce Gracie."
