I agree, Hughes is not the type of fighter to duck another fighter. I think that GSP will take the title and by this time next year we will see Penn VS. Hughes III for the title shot, porbaly after they've both had an opportunity to stomp Karo, Diego, and Diaz in any given matchups.

Matt won that fight fairly squarely, no-one's claimed anything else.

Those comments are simply a reply to all this ridiculous BJ-bashing going on here. The bottom line still is, that a 166-pound guy gave the "most dominating WW of all time" a hell of a fight. They both deserve respect, whether you're a fan or not.

To hell with Penn, he is old news. If Hughes gets past GSP, lets see him in the ring with another contender who's been impressive lately, like Diego Sanchez.

Save Hughs Vs Penn III later on down the line...

Wow so *4 pounds* makes a world of difference all of a sudden, and penn should be priased for still fighting dispite the "signifigant" weight difference?

    Yeah........i think NOT

I am gonna get flamed for this big time, and if I was on Sherdog I would be branded a TUF noob, but oh well. The person who is gonna dethrone Hughes is not GSP nor Penn.It is Diego Sanchez. Please just hear me out.

He's one of the slickest grapplers I have ever seen, and next to Penn he has the best BJJ in the UFC.The difference between Penn and Diego is that Penn's guard is extremely offensive while Diego's is extremely defensive. He uses his BJJ to out position his opponent, and he does it like no other. He did it to Diaz,he did it to Karo, and he can do it to Hughes.Once he gets top
position on Hughes,he can pass his guard,Diego is extremely effective at passing peoples guards. His cardio is absolutely insane, and he will be able to impose a breakneck pace.

Just watch his ADCC match with Marcelo Garcia(World champ of his weight class for some time).Diego lasted 19 minutes with him and even took his back at one point. His pace was incredible in that match. It was grappling at light speed, and he still looked fresh after 19 minutes.

He is not going to out wrestle Hughes,or out muscle him,but he will out position him.

May all the glory of Brock be with you.

ehhh i dont think diego can beat penn even... if matt had that much trouble taking down penn, diego couldnt most likely... and in a 3 round fight penn wouldnt gas.. and im pretty sure diego vs penn is the next bout, however on UFCs website they are already talking about Penn hughes III .... which is fair , its no different then chuck vs randy, might just take a litle longer...
anyway hughes definently needs to worry about GSP, im not sure who will win, but id say the odds are with GSP

There are some good points there, but GSP is taking the belt next. I'm almost as sure about that, as I am about Vera beating Mir.

And I still think Hughes would beat Diego. In a few years Diego would have a shot though.
But if GSP stays at WW in the UFC, I don't see Diego ever holding that belt.

it wouldn't even be shocking if BJ say his spine skull ribs hand legs were all broken after the second round... jee
You can't honestly think the better fighter won on Saturday. I think BJ made it clear that he is a better technically skilled fighter.
Maybe he was gassed, I don't know, but i've never seen that drastic a change in performance from one round to the next....i have trouble believing it was just fatigue. :sport-smi

It's all about style match ups man.GSP is no where near as dangerous as Diego or BJ from the back.BJ vs Diego would be an incredible grappling match, and if BJ was in shape(BIG IF)he would beat Diego. If not he would end up like Karo, losing a UD once Diego dominates the later rounds.

I love GSP,and no one wants him with that belt more than me,but he isn't gonna stuff Matt's takedowns like BJ,and he isnt as severe a threat from his back. His cardio will mean nothing with Matt Hughes in dominant position because Matt will just keep bulldozing and bulldozing until he either wears him out or forces him to make a mental mistake.I think GSP will make a mental mistake. He did the first time, granted he was young, but Matt Hughes will be flawless.Only time Matt makes mistakes is against great BJJ guys who force him to.Not to take anything from GSP's ground game, but he isn't a Diego or a BJ from his back.

I also think Penn should fight Karo or Diaz before he rematches with Hughes.

I think BJ would pwn both of them with relative ease, but it would make for a really exciting fight to fill up a card, and it would give Penn a credible victory before the inevitable trilogy with Hughes.Diaz and Penn would probably just scrap and the fight would no doubt end in an exciting fashion.

This part of the interview is for the nerds who didn't read it and thinks BJ is making excuses.

“Big John gave me plenty of time. I practiced defending against that position with flexibility, but I had none with my core. Congratulations to Matt, he is a great fighter. It's not his fault that that happened. He fought like the champion he is. He deserved the victory,” said a humbled Penn.

Tell me that he is really making excuses and not fighting until he just couldn't physically fight any longer. You guys need a life and stop hating on a guy who risked his health for putting on a show for a bunch of ungrateful spoiled brats. This is way different than some dumb excuse like "he was greased" or something stupid like that.

    /end rant

No, I like those guys! I don't want BJ destroying them.

Did someone say Diego? It's the logical next step for Diego. He beat Karo, and Hughes and GSP are fighting each other.

Or off to lightweight for BJ (for a while)...

I would not be afraid one bit to step in the ring with Matt, BJ, or Diego. ESPECIALLY if i was getting paid to do so. I'd do whatever i could, but would'nt be down on myself after receiving the asswhooping. Afterall many men FAR BETTER than i, have lost to those guys.

$$$ would be worth it in the end

Edit: Honestly, i'd be more concerned with having to fight with my shirt off, and my "glorious physique" exposed for all to see

I wouldn't do it for the money UFC is usually paying. For Chuck's purse... sure what the hell, have the towel ready, cornerman.

I wouldn't have time to be afraid. I'd get into the ring with any of them for the money too.
I'd get put to sleep and wake up a lot richer. Can't beat that.

This would be just a 1-fight sorta thing, not looking to make a career out of it. Whatever money i got would be worth a quick beating.

Example: For a measily $300 i'd step into the ring with Chuck. Meh bruises heal but afterwards my broke ass would be $300 richer.

Also to satisfy my curiousity of how many punches i could land on chuck before i got floored. 1? maybe 3 if i try hard?

Well he needs to fight someone other than the champ.

I don't think he'll go down to 155 until he holds the WW title first.

I don't think they'll give him Diego because he is extremely popular and thier trying to build him up.

LOL! Yeah, imagine how the MMA boards would rake you over the coals. More brutal than a beating for sure.
Randy Couture: I’m more of a battle of attrition, take you down, beat you up till you really don’t want to fight anymore, type of fighter

BJ Penn: It's just the wrong time to fight BJ Penn.

Umm lets be real hear man. the 4 pounds was at wiegh in. and i read that Penn didnt cut any wieght for this fight so Bj penn was prolly 166 fight night where as Hughes could have been anywhere from 175 to 185. there was quite a drastic difference in size for this fight. however i havent seen that being an excuse for the loss. Penn is a better fighter smaller then when he's big in my opinion.
