Worst fighter to get a title shot?
I was wondering who everyone thought was the worst fighter to ever get a title shot in the UFC, and what I mean by that is a fighter who was bad WHEN he got the shot not someone whose skills diminished later on.
I vote for Justin Eilers against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 53, Eilers had just got beat badly by Buentello and then HE gets the shot and not Buentello!

Nate Quarry against Rich Franklin. not that Quarry is a chump but it was certainly undeserved.
how about Gan McGee against Tim Sylvia.

What about Joe Riggs and Hughes. Even though Riggs did not make weight it would of been a title shot if he had. At that point what did he do to get that shot. Was he the only good substitute at the time or something?

first and foremost: kenflo. the guys record was like 4-0 or something, and he is in there with a guy who is 24-2, wtf??? that was strange to me. i dont dislike kenny, but i could think of maybe a handful of guys who deserved to be fighting for the LW belt. anyway.
second: whoever wins this season of tuf. irrespective of who wins, i dont think anyone on that show deserves a title shot. no way, no how!! i dont think any of those guys would even make it as long as rich did against silva. i think that maybe, just maybe, if serra dropped down to LW he may have a chance, but thats about it!

Yeah, I hate to say it, but the I don't feel the TUF guys would fare well against Silva and Hughes.
I'm not saying that Mike Swick and Diego Sanchez deserve a shot at the title next, but they have actually been winning fights. Most of the guys in TUF were losing fights and are now getting their second chance to prove themselves.

Justin Eilers and Gan McGee are definitely at the top of the list. At least Nate Quarry won a couple fights before he fought Franklin. The wins weren't too shabby either, coming against Shonie Carter and Pete Sell.
As for Swick and Sanchez, they both deserve their shots. I'm not saying they can win the titles from Silva and Hughes, respectively, but they do deserve them.

Some good picks here. Eilers definitely, Quarry, even Kenflo, and Riggs.
But let's take a look at Tito's succesful title-defenses:
Yuki Kondo
Evan Tanner
Elvis Sinosic
Vlad Matyushenko
Ken Shamrock
More like which of these actually deserved the shot?

Vlad Matyushenko was the ifc champ for ages and done alright in the ufc before he fought tito, shamrock was less about the title and more about rivalry.

true, and moreover, how can tito claim to be a great champ...who did he beat, except evan tanner. they should say that when they introduce him as the former 5 time defending champ...that would be far more indicative of what they couldnt do than what he did do.

The worst part is Jorge Rivera already fought Silva and did much better than Franklin did...

I think the thread starter got it right, at least from what I can think of, with Justin Eilers. Any explanation for why he got the title fight?

Yeah Riggs Vs Hughes would've been my pick too!
The guy was NOWHERE NEAR ready, to take on a WW the calibur of Matt Hughes. He did'nt even make weight for it! Meh.
Riggs has improved somwhat since then, but he's STILL by no means worthy of a title shot. Hard to belive he ever got one at all....
I'm guessing the rest of the WW divison, guys like karo and GSP, were otherwise too occupied or unable to pick up the gauntlet against matt at the time. So riggs was a filler opponent.

As much as he did for the sport and as much respect he deserves, Royce Gracie had no business in the ring with Matt Hughes.

Royce's fight with hughes was not a title fight. But yea.. I put my vote on Riggs vs Hughes.

Especially when we saw the outcome.....that was probably the easiest fight EVER in Matt Hughes career.
I still don't believe Royce went into that match with any intentions of beating matt. Just went there to lose quickly and collect his money....bahh some "legend".
