Default What is it about Pride thats makes "Better" Fighters?

It seems that there is a trend, not just here but at other forums. When a UFC guy Vs Pride guy debate pops up, most will tend to lean towards the Pride fighter to get the win in such a fantasy match-up. While there does seem to be some justification for this, example: Pride's HW divison compared to UFC's HWs.

My question is: What is it about Pride that somehow makes, or makes MMA fans think, they they are simply better fighters?

Is it because of the "Cage Vs Ring"? Perhaps the cage presents an advantage that a ring does not.

Or maybe one could say that since Pride has a reputation for higher-calibur fighters, perhaps pride just has a way of attracting the "Best of the best" to compete there in order to test their skills?

I'm not sure myself. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts are this is a tired subject and has been done so many times. And hopefully this won't turn into another UFC vs. Pride discussion when it should be about MMA. Some people are biased towards an organization. Some people aren't. Again you are generalizing in saying that most are this way. There are a handful who are, and aren't. And some are the polar opposite.

And I just reread what I wrote and I kind of sound rude but didn't intend it to be. I just get annoyed with the UFC vs. Pride discussions in general. No offense intended.

Only curious as i am an MMA-newbie, of the trend there. I have never seen a pride even outside of free stuff occasionally shown on fox sports channel.

From what little i have seen, pride more often than not, is regarded higher up than UFC by MMA fans.

My bad. Again sorry if I came across harsh. It's just a debate that kind of frustrates me. It'd probably be better if I kept my mouth shut. But to let you know there are certain points in Pride that could be said are superior. Namely the HW division which is a no brainer. The top HWs fight for Pride and that can't be disputed really. It would be nice to see Sylvia against some of the top Pride fighters. He may do well or he may get smashed but no one can say for sure. The LW division is also superior compared to UFC's. Other than that the other divisions are debatable. Other than that both organizations are great. Both have good points as well as bad and should be loved by everyone if we want the sport to continue to grow.

i think that Pride has a better fighter pool because they do not get rid of talent like the UFC. Pride will stick with a guy and keep giving him fights if he is entertaining. UFC ditches you very fast if u arent winning. Like in the UFC Buentelo although not the best fighter out, he was very entertaining cuz he likes knocking people out. HE works his way to a title shot, and AA knock him out with 1 punch, and they get rid of him. He is now fighting smaller shows because of a KO by AA? Pride always has been good at building fighters up. UFC should really take a look at that.

I used to care. I don't anymore. But many in MMA do. That's why I say it's a generalized feeling overseas anyway that Pride is better.

But here in the states to the general public who is only now getting in to MMA, the UFC IS MMA! Period. They don't know or care about Fedor, Mirko, Nog, Wanderlei, etc.

Nor if they saw them fight would I think they'd care. Diego Sanchez is more likely to sell out a stadium in the States for a title fight than any of those above mentioned Pride fighters. But that's here.

Like I said, I only want to see the best fights with the best fighters. No matter where they're from. I do think there should be like every other sport one league if you will that way there's more competition. Or make it like Soccer where it's a country thing.

Cause as long as all these dozens of MMA organizations exist, it waters down the sport.

Sorry Super, but this is such a worn-out topic. You could spend the next month reading what's already been posted just about this. I prefer the UFC, but I like Pride too. As far as which fighter wins, that's individual, and is usually a guess and lots and lots of opinions.

My opinion is that the money they receive allows the fighters access to more quality facilities, camps, and training

and they also dont need to take other jobs, so they can focus more TIME on fighting

years of that kind of worry free training will garauntee a better fighter

AND im not even saying that PRIDE fighters ARE better, but if that is "the case" that would be my reason

If it is so easy, they can put on a glove and do it themselves. I’ll watch them fight.

Pride has enjoyed a level of success that the UFC has only recently attained. They could afford to pay their fighters better and had the reputation to attract fighters. Also fans are a lot more respectful in Pride and that attracts some fighters. To address your specific example, Pride just has the best HWs in the world and a deeper HW division. When it comes to Pride vs UFC as far as divisions go, it really depends on which division we're talking about. Plus the UFC is the new cool thing. So naturally some people who were involved in the sport before this boom need something to look down on the new fans for. Their ignorance of Pride is the perfect ammo. There are really countless reasons, as most have said it's a pretty worn out subject.

The UFC did not get rid of Buentello. He received a better offer so he went with it. The UFC is definitely guilty of not paying their fighters well, but i don't think they get rid of quality fighters all that often.

Money, PRIDE has (or at least had) more, they pay more, the best go where the money is. Lately they are being challenged by other org though!

They did get rid of him in a way. They didn't tell him to hit the road but they showed they weren't too interested in keeping him around in the worst division of all. He was one of the few shining spots in the HW division and he went to another org, got paid more and for like a minute worth of work.

I agree. But unless i see the offers i can't really condemn them. Letting one of your best fighters go in a division that is already really lacking is a terrible idea. Didn't Buentello get picked up by the WFA? If my memory serves they've been dishing out some crazy cash to pick up names. I don't know, i think some people are too quick to jump on UFC's ass for every little thing. But i will definitely miss Paul Buentello.

Losing Buentello is regetable. So he lost to AA? AA was the top guy at the guy at the time. As for him realistially beating tim, just because AA beat Buentello and tim beat AA, does not mean paul would not have a chance against sylvia. Paul might actually match-up a lot better with tim. Well we won't know now....

Oh I'm not like going to go on and on about it or anything. It's just kind of one of those "well that sucks" things. I just wish something would be done about the HW division. It's almost like a punishment to watch the matches now.

he has been fighting with Strike Force. But they did get rid of him by showing him that he wasnt important enough to give a serious offer to. But that is just one case. Robbie Lawler is another one. He hit some rough patches and he hasnt fought in UFC for quite some time. Now he is fighting in Pride, who knows if he will ever come back. Van Arnsdale was another they were quick to release after 1 bad performance. Pete Spratt hasnt fought in the UFC for quite some time most likely because he refused a title shot. Although I am sure he will be fighting again, since he appeared on TUF. Vitor Belfort has been coming and going in UFC for a few years now. Phil Baroni took 4 losses and he was let go by the UFC. The point is there is a huge list of fighters the UFC dumps after a few dissapointing performances. Pride sticks with their guys, and they know how to build fighters up. Now i am a HUGE UFC fan, and prefer them to Pride. But this is the big difference between the organizations. I think Dana and company need to get it out of their heads that they are the "super bowl" of mma and be willing to develop fighters.

So, if all that is true about how PRIDE Fighting keeps fighters, then why did they let go of Anderson Silva when he went 3-2 and he had two straight losses?

anderson silva left pride. he said "i believe i did the best i could in pride fc and i wanted to show my talents else where. I am very happy in the ufc..." pride does a much better job of holding on to fighters but a fighter at anypoint can pick up and leave. it is impossible for any org. to hold down all its fighters for a long period of time.

my opinion is that pride is better. I think the pay thing is a big part of it but not my main reason. If you look at the UFC talent pool. Most of the fighters are from the USA. You have a few guys who are from canada and brazil and they became huge fast. David Lausio (sp), GSP, Babalu, Anderson Silva, just to name the first couple in my head. Pride has great fighters from all over the planet and is always getting fighters from all over the world. The UFC does get fighters from other countries but overall not enough imo. I think all MMA fights should be in a cage to get rid of any connection it might have with boxing or other forms of sinple ma. I dont think it should be in an octagon though. I saw some fights in this huge circle cage and that was awesome imo. pride needs to let people use elbows imo. I think restricting a body part sucks and i know in the us you have to to keep the sport alive.

Over all i just think pride has better fighters and i like the round structure better. The yellow cards are a better idea then just keep standing them up. The pay is much better, and a lot of fighters said that pride cares more about them then the UFC.

Agree its all about money, pride has the best payouts and therefor the best fighter.
The UFC has started paying more, therefor the gap isnt as big anymore.

Second i think its about witch organisation has the most respect by the fighters and i think pride is the number one organisation for most fighters. Most money, biggest shows, thoughest competition, the most fanatic fans pride is the number one.
