Default Recent Marquardt interview!

Brush with Greatness

Wayne Gretzky

Jay Gatsby

Frosted Flakes

Nathan Marquardt

What do all of these people (and cereal) have in common? They'rrrrrre grrrreat!

I knew I was about to talk with a true talent when I walked into T's KO fight club in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He's the sixth ranked middleweight fighter in the world with an undefeated, three win record in the UFC. This middleweight title contender is also the seven time King of Pancrase. That's more than anyone else, including both Shamrock brothers and Bas Rutten.

I arrived a little before Nate "The Great" Marquardt, so his boxing coach and owner of T's KO, Trevor Wittman, put on Nate's highlight film in the office. Folks, if you've never seen Nate fight, you're missing out on excitement, skill, and drama. It was like watching one of those UFC Greatest Knockouts DVDs, but it was all one person.

Nate destroyed opponents with flying knees, crazy and remarkable submissions, knock-out punches, and assorted takedowns. I'd always thought very highly of Nate as a contender in the UFC middleweight division, but after viewing the tape I'd say there's no one who can beat him at 185 pounds.

Back in Denver, after helping new welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre win his title, Nate is preparing for a December 30th battle with Jiu-Jitsu fighter Dean Lister. A win pretty much earns Nate the next shot at the UFC middleweight title.

When Nate arrived, I was able to sit down and throw a few questions at him. Here's what he had to say.

Testosterone Nation: How on earth did someone from suburban Denver turn into a seven time King of Pancrase and world ranked UFC fighter?

Nathan Marquardt: When I was about fifteen I started watching the UFC. I knew that was what I wanted to do. I found a local facility that had kickboxing, karate, and some jiu-jitsu, and began training there in high school.

From there I competed in a few local shows. They had a tournament that I won, and the winner was supposed to fight in the UFC. However, the UFC matchmaker wasn't there, only some Pancrase people. That's when my Pancrase career began.

T-Nation: How did your family feel about you going to Japan to fight in Pancrase after high school?

Marquardt: Ever since I started fighting, my dad really liked the sport. He'd even go to my grappling matches before I started fighting; he was very supportive. My mom, though supportive, is a nurse, so she didn't like watching me fight live at first. But she always knew I was athletic and now she really doesn't mind.

T-Nation: When you went overseas for the first time, how did you progress as a fighter?

Marquardt: I'd say one of the biggest turning points for my career wasn't the first time I fought over there, but the first time I stayed there to train. I fought there in 1999, then returned in early 2000 and trained for five months. I progressed as a fighter like never before and was able to pack on some muscle to take my game to an entirely new level.

T-Nation: You're the youngest Pancrase champion, the first middleweight Pancrase champion, and have won the tournament more than anyone else. Because of this, are you a celebrity in Japan?

Marquardt: (laughs) I'm not as famous as Chuck Liddell is here, but yeah, people know me and would recognize me.

T-Nation: Did that influence your decision to sign with UFC over Pride?

Marquardt: Not really. I wanted to fight in the States. I love Japan, but it's difficult being an American fighter overseas. For example, when the fight goes to decision, they're going to favor the Japanese fighter over the American one. The UFC also offered me a good deal, and I get to be with my family and friends more when fighting in the States.

T-Nation: You're a very soft spoken, humble guy. What kind of mentality do you have when you train and fight?

Marquardt: When I train, sometimes I'll have to get into an aggressive mode, but usually I'm more concerned about working on specific techniques. You train to learn things and prepare, so you can't always have an aggressive mentality. I'm always trying to improve; I'm always trying to be the best, training room or not. I just want to be the best. In a fight, however, you give everything you have to win.

T-Nation: So the day of the fight, to get pumped up, are you more of a "listen to Slipknot and bang head against locker" guy, or do you just try to stay relaxed and focused?

Marquardt: I like to feel comfortable and relaxed. I don't want to be surrounded by people I don't know because I feel like I have to impress them and it takes away from my focus.

The day before a fight I enjoy being around my family, friends, and by myself so I can be stress-free while I mentally prepare. The day of the fight I try to stay in my room until I have to leave for the venue so I can get some good rest and good food, and stay distraction free.

T-Nation: So what's the best part about the fight day?

Marquardt: When the octagon door closes, for sure! No more waiting. Waiting is the worst. Walking out is exciting too. You get your blood really pumping and you know the wait is over.

T-Nation: Being a more reserved person, is it hard for you to "talk trash" during the pre-fight interviews?

Marquardt: No. Usually they'll ask you the type of question where you have to give a definitive answer. When they edit it and put it on the screen, it looks like you're making a statement, not answering a question.

In Japan, everything is through a translator, so whatever I said was fine. Because I'm so humble, we had to do a few takes in my first UFC fight. I understand what they're trying to do now and I have better answers.

T-Nation: What's it like backstage at fights? Do you ever see your opponent?

Marquardt: It's pretty separated, with most guys warming up and talking to their teammates and corner men. There's a chance you may run into someone walking into the bathroom, but most fighters ignore each other.

T-Nation: Have you ever fought a friend, like we see so often on The Ultimate Fighter TV show?

Marquardt: I've fought Kazuo Misaki twice, and trained with him for about a year a while back. We knew that there was a chance we'd fight because we were in the same weight class, so we just had to put it in the back of our heads while we trained.

But for the most part, I wouldn't fight a friend. When I fight, I'm in there trying to hurt the guy. The only way I would now is if there was enough money on the line where we could both think about setting up retirement funds.

T-Nation: Is there any fight you're most proud of?

Marquardt: There are a few. The first time I beat Misaki, seeing how he was a proven fighter and a tough guy. My first Pancrase belt was a great moment, as was my first UFC fight with Salaverry. I had a lot to prove and was pretty hyped up, so I knew I had to win.

T-Nation: Going back to The Ultimate Fighter, I've heard some MMA veterans say that the TUF guys get the easy road to the UFC. What's your opinion on TUF?

Marquardt: I think it's great for the sport. It's helped MMA get so much popularity. A lot of these guys are already world class fighters, so it helps them with their careers. Four of my training partners (Diego Sanchez, Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, Dan Christison) are TUF alum, and they're all great fighters. Diego is probably next in line to get a title shot!

I was actually considering trying out for season two, but the UFC offered me a contract before the tryouts. I would've loved to go on the show as a fighter, and especially as a trainer.

T-Nation: Who are some of your favorite fighters?

Marquardt: Mostly guys I've trained with. Guys like Diego, Rashad, Keith, Duane "Bang" Ludwig, and Georges St-Pierre, who I just trained with last week.

T-Nation: I'm sure T-Nation readers would love to hear about your weightlifting and diet when getting ready for a fight.

Marquardt: My training changes all the time depending on when I'm fighting and who I'm fighting. When I first started lifting weights, I trained more like a bodybuilder and put on some decent size. However, I've completely changed that.

I do a lot of heavy powerlifts and Olympic lifts for strength and explosiveness when I'm still far out from a fight. I'll do full body training and circuits as the fight approaches to help with my conditioning. In the last few weeks, I'll do little weight training so I can focus purely on my fighting techniques.

As for diet, it doesn't really change much. I walk around between 195 and 200, so it's pretty easy to get down to 185 by cutting water. I eat a lot of carbs and protein, mainly chicken, fish, oatmeal, fruit, beef, and protein and carb replacement drinks, and I eat fairly often. I may have dessert once or twice a week at night when I'm far out from a fight, but I cut that out as the fight approaches.

T-Nation: What's the hardest you've ever been hit?

Marquardt: I've never been knocked out, only knocked down; I just got caught on my chin. However, Keith Jardine kicked me in the head during training a few weeks back and that made my arm go numb for a while.

T-Nation: Ever use your fighting skills in a street fight?

Marquardt: I try to avoid street fighting as much as possible, but a few years back I had to fight a guy. I didn't want to hurt him; it's just not fair to the guy, so I held him on the ground, you know, tried to control the situation until he gave up. I haven't been in a street fight in a long time though.

T-Nation: What do you like to do when you're not fighting or training?

Marquardt: I'm on the road a lot, so I just enjoy being home with my wife, daughter, and dog. We really enjoy just going to the movies and hanging out with close friends. On the road, I usually just like spending time with my teammates and going to movies.

T-Nation: Would you ever let your kids be fighters?

Marquardt: Yeah, I would, if that's what they wanted to do. I'd never make them, as nothing is guaranteed in this sport. You don't know if you'll make money, if you'll get hurt, or even get to a high level. They need to have a backup plan no matter what — things like a good education and other career options in case fighting didn't work out.

T-Nation: Well, it looks like it's working out for you! Thanks for the interview!

Marquardt comes across very well in this interview, intelligent and well-spoken. I'm looking forward to him getting finally some attention in the UFC. If he beats Lister he'll be right up there in the division.

id like to see some more highlights too.... he seems to just be a winner... a tough overall well rounded MMA fighter... but hes also very reserved... from the fights ive seen, he doesnt seem to be a champ or a very exciting fighter, although the doerkson fight was alright... he just kidna fights, doesnt have any particular style,

Marquardt isn't championship material? That's a pretty retarded thing to say.

He already has two wins over the real Pride champion,he was a 7 time King of Pancrase,he hasn't lost in 3 years, and he's undefeated in the UFC.What more could you ask for???You must have pretty high standards.

His resume outside of the UFC was ten times better than Silva's

Or how about a lil MMAmath for you...

Marquardt>Takase>Silva

Oh well,I'm not gonna argue with you.You just like messing with me,but it's getting kind of old.

no its not that im messing with you.. i think you say a lot of kind of outlandish statements.... which never seem to be right... in this case im giving marquardt credit for being a very strong fighter... however im saying i personally dont think hes on the level of franklin and silva... at best hes #3 but i could even make a case for him being lower then that... beating doerkson or lister which he probably will wont change that opinion either.. he also doesnt really have the marketability either... however he is very strong all around.... i dont think anything i said there is "retarded"

What's outlandish about Marquardt holding a MW title?
What's outlandish about Tyson Griffin holding a LW title?
What's outlandish about terrific grappler like Schafer beating an unproven Bisping?

It's a difference of opinion, all those fighters are certainly capable, and I've been right about alot of things.

I said MacDonald would destroy Herman,I said Rashad would TKO Lambert, and I said Diego would get a UD over Karo. All those things were pretty outlandish at the time weren't they????

You're just using my Mir support against me.

ok, all my points vs an equal number of points on the schafer\bisping fight then???

what has schafer ever done?
i already said marquardt was good, but its a bit much to say he will ever hold the title...
and griffin is another fun up and comer.... far far away from being in the class of penn or sherk... he is years away from even getting a title shot assuming he won all his upcoming matches... of which i dont even know when they are...
my point is that you can make those claims (except schafer) but they are all far fetched thats all...
