if not vera, what will be next fro the HW division?

UFC 68: MARCH 3, 2007 IN COLUMBUS, OHIO (Nationwide Arena) (taken from mmaweekly sun, dec 17)

-Tim Sylvia (#5 Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Brandon Vera [dependent on contract negotiations]
-Rich Franklin (#5 Middleweight)* vs. TBA
-Mike Swick vs. TBA

interesting. considering how long vera has been around, i am not sure how a power struggle (if it is or becomes one) with dana white would go.

sorry, bomber, you got a source, i just want to know what the hell is going on lol.

I had read a Vera interview where he said he didn't want to fight for the belt yet. But when I looked for the interview, I found something that says he will take the title shot, even though he'd rather wait:

MMANews.com: Now, before we really get into your fight with Mir, the last time I talked to you, you said you wanted to really elevate your game before a title shot. You said you just didn't want to win the title, you wanted to hold on to it for a while. Do you still feel the same, or do you think after a win here you'll be ready for that?

Brandon Vera: I still feel the exact same, I mean I'm not comfortable holding the title yet, I mean I still got a couple things, I still get caught in practice with a couple things that I need to work on so I definitely want to be able to hold that title for a while. Like a ten-time champion or something, not just a flash in the pan, in-and-out reign. I still got things to work on, a title shot or not I do want to fight the best guys in the world. So I guess I'll just have to take it as it comes.

MMANews.com: Yeah, if they offer it to you after this, you'll accept it.

Brandon Vera: [laughs] Exactly.

there seems to be a growing trend of fighters wanting to wait for their title shot.

both diego and vera said they wanted to wait, the difference being that diego didnt call out the champ after his first fight.

you think it is strange that vera calls out the champ after his first fight then says he would rather prolong the shot at the title?

Wrong champ. He called out Liddlell, not Sylvia.

Sanchez has been calling for a title shot ever since TUF. Now that he's seen Hughes beaten like a rug, Diego has pulled in his horns.

i know he was calling out liddell, i just thought it was strange that he would call out any champ then shy away from his chance, so to speak.

diego has said a few times, though, that he doesnt want the champ yet. i think that every guy on tuf wanted to fight the champ lol. for all that, the guys we get from tuf fighting the champs are serra and lutter. wtf?? lol.

He's only started whistling that tune since the Hughes beatdown.

an opportunist you say lol.

i often wonder how much of an impact something like that would have--referring to seeing the most dominant WW get the beat down. next we'll see every WW come out of the woodwork and want to take a shot at hughes lol.

do you, bomber, (or anyone else) think diego would beat hughes. i kind of have my doubts, but diego seems to rise to the occasion no matter who he faces. hughes is still pretty friken good (one loss certainly doesnt mean he is a can overnight, yet a lot of people seem to think otherwise).

Yeah, I'm sure there are a few guys who want a shot at Hughes now, like Kos, Sanchez, Karo, Fitch and more. I bet Diaz would like a try.

I don't know about Hughes vs Sanchez, they match up pretty well. I'd have to go with Hughes for the win, but I'd be cheering for Diego.

i tend to agree, but i think it would be great to see. hughes may win, but i think diego would look great or even surprise a few people.

i wonder if matt loses to gsp again, if he will retire or not. there a few young fighters i would love to see matt get in the octagon with, especially diego. i think karo would be exciting to watch in a match with matt.

SHOWTIME TO TELEVISE MIXED MARTIAL ARTS EVENTS

New MMA Organization Pro Elite, Inc. Goes Head-to-Head with Ultimate Fighting Championship®

NEW YORK (November 13, 2006) — In a landmark deal for premium television, Showtime Networks Inc. has partnered with Pro Elite, Inc. to televise live mixed martial arts (MMA) events on SHOWTIME beginning in 2007, it was announced today by Ken Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sports and Event Programming, Showtime Networks.

The first event will air live on SHOWTIME on February 10, 2007, with additional events airing on the premium television network through 2009. All MMA events on SHOWTIME will be televised in high-definition.

Pro Elite, Inc. is headed by an impressive team of successful entertainment producers, event promoters and new media/internet visionaries. CEO and entertainment executive, Douglas DeLuca (Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Man Show), and the President of the live event division, Gary Shaw, will promote the televised events with Rumble World Entertainment’s President and CEO Jay Dee Penn , a black-belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a veteran promoter in the field of mixed martial arts.
Thanks mate.

Well as said before it feels like Vera just want som leverage for his contract negotiations. I think everything will work out just fine. Vera will fight Tim next.

Kinda weird that he now had a change of heart and said he want to wait a little with the title shot. You would think that Vera with his confidence would wanna jump on Big Tim and get the title as soon as possible. Could there be some doubt in his mind? I mean even though Tim is boring as hell he is a pretty dominant champion.

I think if Matt dosent retire after the second GSP fight(given that he loses to GSP again) and Diego gets a shot at him. I think Matt would beat Diego. Diego hasnt fought anyone with that strenght on the ground and Matt would be angry as hell after two straight losses.
Matt gotta be the stronger wrestler and even though diego knocked Riggs out i doubt he will knock Matt out on the feet, not that Matt is good on the feet, just that i dont think Diego can stop his takedowns.
Matt via ref. stoppage

We should probably start a thread about the UFC going under. IFL is going to buy MMA Burger King and Jenna Jameson.

Pride hasn't dropped anyone.

Fedor signed a one fight deal to fight in his own country, and then signed a two year deal with Pride.

Mirko is still in negotiations, and has always been known to play hardball in the past, but ultimately he alway sticks with Pride.

Everybody else is still part of the roster.

I wonder who they would have Sylvia fight if Vera did walk away...it seems like good timing on Vera's part because the UFC needs him more now than ever.

Why are you people so angry about talk about Pride selling. Wrestling Observer and MMAweekly had an article about DSE having talks with WWE, UFC, ect.. It has been said that DSE denied this, but sinse when does that count for anything? I don't remember anyone saying it was going to happen or that they wanted it to happen. I don't understand why just talking about the possibility is making some of you so angry. And i really don't see why you need to vent your frustration with sarcastic posts all over the UFC section of this forum. The odds that it's happening are slim to none, relax people.

Well I'll reply to your post RockemSockem even though you didn't say me specifically. Most of the stuff I have said lately about those kinds of things are just jokes. The only thing that is annoying is people taking the speculation as fact. As I've said before it's fine to have these delusions like my old buddy MTKrav has of Dana becoming the Bill Gates of MMA. If that happens...so what? I don't care but people talk like it is set in stone and that is irritating. And in response to when does what DSE say count for anything? Well it is their company so I'll take their word before any website. Especially one called Wrestling Observer who started the rumor.

thats fine if youd like people to establish that these are all rumors, which is obviously the case (them being rumors) but if rumors bother anyone, they might be better suited for a newsroom because a chat forum is not the place for them lol
