Chuck Liddel is not a great champion, revisited.
On an earlier thread, I stated that Chuck is not a great champion, yet. He was a good champ, not a great champ. The reason I stated that is because, at that time, Chuck had only defended the belt 3 times (Couture, Horn, and Babalu). After last night's victory over Tito, I believe that Chuck is a great champ, now!!! 4 successful title defenses! I believe the record is 5 by Matt Hughes and Tito. Chuck could tie them if he defends the next time. It breaks my heart because BJ Penn and Tito are my favorite fighters. Chuck is a bad man and a great champ!

yea.. was a sad night for me last night, but Liddell is just one tough dude. Unless Crocop drops to lhw (which i doubt he will) Liddell will probably set the new record for most title defenses.

He talks a lot about wanting to spend more time with his kids. I wouldn't be surprised if he beat Rampage and announced that his retirement was in sight.

I really hope thats not the case , would be a shame to see chuck retire without fighting Wandi , that would be a good way to end his career , KOing the axe murderer , after that he can hang the gloves up.

Also remember retirement in MMA isn't as permanent as some other jobs. I'll bet Chuck comes out of retirement at some point.

Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell is, indeed, a great champion. He will fight anybody that the UFC can find for him to fight. He wins convincingly and dramatically and entertainly in almost every single fight. He has had an impressive list of KO'd and TKO'd opponents. His last eleven fights have ended in KO or TKO, even his losses (two losses; Rampage and Couture).
If Liddell retires as the champion, then I would not expect him to ever come out of that retirement. He has plenty of money and all that comes with being rich and a celebrity. He would have little to prove. I do not see him retiring in the next three or four years; he is only 37 years old (going on 38). He has many years to go. And, lets face it, he has not suffered injuries like many other fighters have gone through. He takes little damage in fights.
I think that The Iceman will be with us until at least 2010.

If Chuck isn't considered a great champ I don't know who could be.. He is tallented, dominate, respectfull, a gamer, and always looking to finish.. Really what more could you want out of a MMA fighter???

Nobody on this forum hates Chuck Liddell more than I do.
But even still,I think he's a great champion and a hall of famer.
I await the day that Rampage has UFC gold.

If your going to say a strong statement like that you should follow it up with some type of reasoning .
Chuck is a great champion because of his multiple title defences and in the convincing fashion in which he wins.

Name another person that has defended his title as many times as Chuck and has done it as convincingly as Chuck and against the level of competition that Chuck has. He has a streak of about 7 or 8 fights, including his title defenses, where they ALL have ended with a T(KO) in the early portion of the fight. Name another person that has done this and please, fill us in as to why that person is a great champ and why Chuck is not.

Yup all Chuck's fights he WINS and ends by KO. Whereas Tito could *NOT* even put away Forrest griffin, having to rely on a decision to "win".
By that alone, i knew Tito had NO hope of defeating chuck. Ya gotta step it up A LOT more than that in order to beat the iceman

From what i heard he only signed a 2-fight contract. Getting knocked out by chuck SHOULD happen in one of those two fights.
Next title defense: Rampage

Chuck is a great champion for two reasons:
1)He beats anyone you stick in front of him
2) His style never changes. Too often champs get cocky and try to re-invent the wheel. For Chuck, there is no wheel to re-invent. He will live and die by the KO as Subgenius brilliantly put it.
This also is why some fans don't like him. They think he is some undisciplined street fighter because they havent seen him use his submission or other skills. Well, to that I say PISS ON IT. I mean, when you know that if you land your punches or kicks youre gonng KTFO of someone????
DO IT! you'd be an idiot to maintain a championship with submission and grappling alone as Tito is now finding out.
Its far more devastating physically and mentally to your opponent when you KTFO of them!

I think the Chuck/Rampage fight will be the first time I will be hoping Chuck KFTO's his opponent. Cool for the UFC to bring in new fighters, I just like Chuck more than Rampage (Except when Rampage slams the hell outta guys, I like that).

Let's just appreciate Chuck's accomplishments instead of trying to put emphasis on how great of a champion he (or anyone for that fact) is.
