Default UFC 70 free on HBO?

UFC 70 to Air Free on HBO - MMAUniverse.com

Quote:
The UFC’s latest supporting cable channel, HBO, have reportedly decided to air live UFC events free of charge in 2007.

The series of free shows are expected to begin when the UFC return to England on April 28th, for UFC 70. HBO have agreed to air three UFC events at a midnight slot, then depending on how it goes consider another three event extension.

The UFC has long relied on Pay Per View buys as a major source of income but believe that increasing the frequency of it’s shows, from approximately once a month to one every few weeks, will make up for the loss of revenue.
Would be cool but I dont have HBO and most likely never will

Yup, this is a portent of doom. The golden era of the UFC has an end in sight. Once HBO starts showing it, it will start charging, and will take away Spike's interset. Remember when CBS and ABC had boxing?

I have a distinct feeling that HBO will show UFC 70 a week after it has happened live on PPV.

Also, when boxing was on the major networks, it WAS the golden era of boxing. I'm thinking of back when Cosell was the announcer and boxing was at a peak. Only good things will come from more exposure for the UFC.

I think it would be cool for them to have some time on HBO(not all the PPV's though), most people I know have it.

COntinue the PPV's and simply do it like HBO does it. A week after the PPV, they show the fight for free.

Not a bad strategy and HBO makes big $$$ on its PPV stuff using that formula.

UFC may also be offering more fights on a more regular basis. Heck there is only a couple weeks between 69 and 70. Thus one will be a PPV the other free on HBO. I am down with that and it has potential to be in HD on HBO, even better!!

why would it be the end for the ufc? It would bring more coverage to the sport. I know that Dana wouldnt just give up PPV dollars. There has to be a catch.

Who's to say it won't still be on PPV outside of the U.S.? I doubt that they will put the marquee match ups on HBO. Those will probably stay on PPV.

I think over here in Canada, we need some super satellite package to get HBO.
If us Canadians are lucky, they'd show the HBO stuff on TSN (or is it ESPN?), or one of the Canadian sportschannels we get. Like how they often show HBO boxing sometimes on our channels. Maybe this can work. If they do it for boxing, there could be a chance they'd do it for UFC events too.

I dunno for sure, but this is my guess, and I know some other Canadians on other boards have said the same thing.
