A Rock in a hard place
Well I have to say I was very throughly impressed by Anderson Silvas performance, however it appeared to me that his takedown defence was very shabby. The main point of this thread is to open up discussion of an idea that has been brewing in my head. As you may know, or may not know, Nate Quarry is planning a return to MMA in the summer of this year. I also believe firmly that he has all the skills he needs to fight his way back to the top of the MW food chain. I believe that in the future he will hold the belt. Before you object I want you to seriously take time to visulize him fighting game MW fighters such as Leben, Cote, Smith, Sell( again), Swick, Franklin, and Marquat. I believe he can do it, what do you think?

Quarry is healed! He will be back to rock the MW division in '07.

In a word, no.
Seems like a nice guy and everything. Doesn't have the skills to be quite at the top level.

I think we'd need to see more from him. And also more improvement from him.
I think in time he could make his way up to the higher levels, but I dunno about winning the title.

Nate Quarry will never hold a UFC title. he is a has a great persona and is good for the sport but he suffers from the same problem as alot of Team Quest guys do. They have convinced themselves they are better than they are. Chris Leben certainly had that problem even after he was beaten by Kos and then Florian and i think maybe since he got his blocked knocked off by Silva he has come back to the real world. Even Randy to some extent when it comes to his striking. two fights with Liddell he gets KO'd because he thinks he can stand and bang with Chuck. Toss Evan Tanner in here as well, being another former Team Quest guy.

I would just love to see Nate back in the ring again after the major surgery he has had that would be a great accoplishment in itself! I think nate could compete with some of those fighters you mentioned.

i was impressed early by quarry's ko's but i must say that when i watched him fight ace it didn't even seem like the same guy, almost like he looked past ace and then bang one of the nastiest ko's i have ever seen .. i mean he was laid out stiff. he definately IMO needs to work on many things before he is a serious contender. IMO he was the best fight to come out of TUF1 but was always held in a very high regard right from teh get go so he never really had to prove anything to anyone, after he healed he was rushed in unlike many of the new TUF stars. IMO if quarry would have been babied along the way he would also have an outstanding record and prolly an undefeated UFC record. Difference being Nate stepped up and took big fights! KInda like Macdonald is now

In all honesty, I was never overly impressed with Nate Quarry as a fighter. As an individual I respect how he carries himself, however as a fighter I just feel his style of striking does not match up well with the better strikers in the middleweight division. For example, matchups such as Cote, Silva, Franklin and Swick are undoubtedly bad matchups for him striking wise. Against any technical striker, I just think he will be easily defeated similarly to his Franklin fight.

Could you be more specific? He already beat Sell, I just think alot of people underestimate him because he got KO'ed by Franklin, who just so happens to be an awesome very welll rounded fighter. I never underestimate anyone, cause anyone can win and I think that Terry Martin is an excellent example of that.

Your not the only one, I mean Tanner is another good fighter that is often over looked, his last fight he got an awesome 1st round triangle of Justin Levens. Surely he will fight again.

I'd definitely want to see Evan Tanner back fighting. He's one of my favorite fighters, it sucks that he's not in the shape or mindset to still fight.
I think if Tanner does come back, a fight with Quarry would be a good tune-up match for him.

I don't wanna be a jerk or anything, but the expression is "Caught between a rock AND a hard place" not "IN a hard place."
That being said, I would agree that Silva's takedown defense was very shaky looking, Lutter had little to know problem shooting in on him. I found it very strange that Silva didn't throw more knees to stuff Lutter's takedown attempts, especially considering what Silva did to Franklin with his knees.
However, Silva was able to hold his own on the ground and actually win the fight there, so hard to say whether or not getting taken down is that much of a weakness for him. He's great standing up and I would think that this next round of several months of training will probably feature a large amount of takedown defense training.
