Well Gonzaga is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the UFC...He has finished every fight and has zero decisions on his record...He submitted Branden Lee Hinkle faster than Monson could and he TKO'D Fabiano Scherner faster than Vera could...He finished previously undefeated Marrero in the 1st round...his only loss was against Werdum, who is generally considered a top 10 HW in all of mma...plus add the submission skills that Bomber mentioned and I think you have a guy that deserves some credibility.
Also I think this is a good idea for the UFC. At least this could be a legitinate #1 contender fight, which I prefer to see than to watch CC walk through nobodies on his way to a title shot.

Don't know if it's already been posted, but Gonzaga has confirmed this rumor to be true. I'm surprisingly interested to see this fight. Hey if Gonzaga gets Cro Cop down, who knows what can happen.

You absolutely nailed this one, Bomber. If I didn't know any better, I'd claim that you were Dana White incognito.

Cro Cop on Gonzaga
"Never heard of him. But if UFC thinks he's an ideal opponent for me, I have no problem with that. I don't get to choose who I'll fight, and I have no reason to complain why my road to the title will be easier that I thought."

Vera really was the more logical choice.
1) Gives cro cop a bigger test before getting the title shot
2) Gives Vera one last big match before he leaves.

Why would they want to give Vera anymore big matches after he has decided to leave for another organization?

For ratings lol. Get everything they can out of him before he leaves.

i agree.. who cares if they increase vera's marketability in a competitors organization. i doubt it will do much damage to the UFC. i think it would probably increase the interest in cro cop.

Vera's a very dangerous match up for anyone. he's the HW version of GSP in my opinion. he's the guy everyone is waiting to take over. why would you risk losing two fighters just to get a little kick in the ratings. if Vera beats Mirko and then goes to Showtime you not only promote showtime but you also lose creditability with Mirko. i cant believe how many people actually think this is a good matchup from a bussiness standpoint. if you go directly from rankings then yes this is the obvious choice but knowing Vera is not going to stick around makes it not the case.

Vera is definitely no chump, and I am not one who would say he would definitely lose to Mirko. I guess there is no sense in risking destroying the hype around the "phenom" the UFC just brought in. The average UFC fan who doesn't follow MMA on a weekly basis will always wonder what happened to that Vera guy. Out of site out of mind as far as the contention for the title goes. Same reason you will never see Dana White mention the best heavy weight in the world by name.

I think this is a logical match up. There really isn't many options out there.
I watched Gonzaga's last two fights again, I think he could do some damage if he can get Mirko down. Mirko will pick him apart standing up though. One last tune up fight before going for the belt!

i would'nt mind seeing it. i am all for upsets, they make the sport interesting and shake things up. but i don't see it happening. CroCop has the best takedown defense going and a BJJ fighter is'nt going to submit you standing.

Tell that to Pat Militich.
Vera is just a bad idea all around, he loses it is bad for him and the where ever he goes, I happen to like the guy. He wins it is horrible for the UFC. It would be great for Cro Crops next fight to be aginst Fedor but that has about the same chance as Dana putting him in there with Vera for his last fight on contract. They are building the division, we are not going to see him vs herring, vera, arlovski, coture or anyone else till he gets his shot at the title.
