*RUMOR* Cro Cop Vs Gonzaga At UFC 70
mma weekly has updated its rumor mil and does not have kongo as the fighter but gonzaga. I dont think gonzaga will have a shot at taking him down, i rather see kongo try and bang with cro cop and get KOed.... either way if this is on HBO this could be a headliner. Gonzaga is a highly ranked fighter in the UFC hw divison

Yup, this wouldn't be a stand-up fight, but it would be against a higher ranked fighter.
Still, he's not recognizable enough to really give Mirko a bunch of credibility.

could be a good match Gonzaga has done well in his stint in the UFC. Look for Mirko though to win by his famous LHK.

Too bad, on two counts. 1. I was looking forward to a crazy kickboxing match with Kongo. 2. Gonzaga was looking good for a title match down the road. A loss to Mirko now will hurt his chances at a shot later.

What's the difference if he loses to Crocop in a nontitle fightnow, or to him in a title fight later?

The difference is, going in we'll know that Mirko has beaten him. It will spoil the Striker vs Grappler drama.
Cro Cop is going to need contenders once he wins the belt. Gonzaga is much more viable as a contender than Kongo.

What ranks and titles have you held?
Rank: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt
Titles: Heavyweight BJJ Black Belt GP 2004 Champion/ ADCC Trials Brazil Champion and ADCC 2005 second place, four-time BJJ national Champion, five-time Sao Paulo State Champion
Because Gonzaga is considered one of the BJJ masters. And because Gonzaga walked through Marrero, who took out Kongo, who was looking like a contender.

that counts for nothing man, there are plenty of BJJ champions who have never made the UFC. he beat Marrero who to be honest beat an inconsistant Kongo. these guys are all cans, Mirko will KO him in the first round. well he would KO most people in the first round, as its mirkos 2nd fight then i suppose he still warrents a can.
why not give Cro Cop vs Vera, give the statement that look how good this guy is, then drop vera as if there was no contractual disagreements at all? of course there will be people who will say vera has a chance of beating Mirko and the UFC wont want to drop the poster boy, but come on what makes a fighter special? the people he has beat.

I would also much rather see a stand up war with Kongo, maybe the UFC knew that and thought Gonzaga was the safer opponent to set up Cro Cop's next fight which would be for the title?
Cro Cop would beat either one of them but Kongo has a real punchers, or in this case, kickers chance, and that is what I was looking forward too!

if you don't want crocop to go back to pride, give him a real opponent before his title shot...
but i guess there isn't one really.... the ufc heavyweights are really weak after the top5 :\

Gonzaga is not a can. He's easily #5 in the division, with a good chance to move up.
Why not Cro Cop vs Vera? Because as you mentioned, Vera could get lucky and take out the champion in waiting. Even if Vera loses but looks good, it ups his profile. The UFC is not going to do anything to increase Vera's marketability in a competitor's organization. His last match will likely be on the undercard and only shown if O'Brien wins.
Like you, I'd LOVE to see Mirko and Vera fight, but it's clear they won't any time soon.

speaking of cred, why is teh ufc offering vera 200k a fight?
i like gonzaga. hes had a good run, and i agree with bomber about it sucks they are fighting before the belt.
i think gonzaga is top 5 because there are only 5 fighters in the HW division.
i think couture is great, but his last 2 losses were at LHW. putting couture makes as much sense as having penn in LW on NBC.com, or having chewbaca in teh courtroom. it makes no sense.
i still miss mtkrav

Herring has no wins in the UFC, Couture has no fights in HW, Kongo lost to Marrera, who Gonzaga destroyed.

After watching Cro-cop destroy the first tin-foiled can they threw at him, I don't know if i would pay to see another easy win against an opponent who isn't worthy enough to be in the same octagon. Gonzaga has no chance. Now Vera vs. Mirko... that is a fight to get excited about.
P.S. -- isn't gonzaga the fighter the crowd booed out of the arena a while back because he and his opponent were afraid to hit each other?

Gonzaga is a better fighter than Sanchez, and he'll deliver a more competitive match than Eddie did. But, clearly, its another win for Mirko.
