Discipline and fitness I would think, which carrys over into other areas that would require it.
Such as learning valuable fitness techniques in the army, to build muscle right, endurance training for cardio, proper form, and the mental confidence and patience to stick with it, etc.
Would not suprise me if some former military guys, continue to do some of the things they did in the army to improve their endurance in tough situations(Ex: MMA).

i think the mental discipline is a bigger thing than the physical, but they're both huge. there's a lot of great athletes that are in amazing shape but will still quit if they're put in a bad position for a long enough time. i think someone with great army training would be able to work generally well under any situation mentally.

I'm gonna make you my girlfriend...
Anyways, I think it has to do w/ mental and physical toughness. A lot of military guys are both, so I think it takes them far (But, I'm not sure wtf happened to Shonie... =P)

Agreed. The Military (excet the Air Force), make you hard. It's hard training, and its a hard life for the 4 or more years you're in.

No army can make you as savage and as disciplined as training with the Thai in their homeland. If you really wanna fight and you are hardcore this is the place to be. I was there for a year straight, wish I stayed.

Chris Price and Wes Combs were also soldiers. There is a definite physical and mental disciple that the military provides, and there's some Jiu Jitsu, boxing, and hand to hand combat instruction, so yeah a soldier can have a lot of advantages over your average guy, but the training isn't MMA specific and though it doesn't make a fighter, it could make a fighter a better fighter.

Because its about Randy and CroCop, and I couldn't think where else it should go. I'm sorry if its out of place
Sergei and Igor Vovchanchyn were also in the army right?
Its seems that Randy CC and Fedor are in a different league when it comes to executing plans in the ring and calmness in the ring. And generally getting down to business. I thought this must come from having seen combat.

And how much experience have you had (minus your year w/the Thai) have you had training to try and kill others who are trying to kill you? You speak from one experience, I assume you have the other to reference from?
I'm fat, out of shape, etc., but when I served and fought for my country, I can reassure you that my mental discipline was the best that could be had and the my physical shape wasn't far behind.
I dare you to be placed in a hot zone with live fire and tell me the two experiences are even on the same level. Maybe Ed can go with you...

I vaguely thought I remembered Fedor saying he has had to kill before. But maybe I'm getting my fighters mixed up. I have no idea about Randy, but was thinking even without actual combat there is enough hardship and danger in training to toughen a guy. (Not that I'd want to do it.)
Thats not to say I haven't met army people who seemed like dicks too though.
