UFC 72 confirmed on Spike TV
UFC 72 to Air on Spike TV
Posted by UFC Junkie on April 16, 2007 at 7:10 pm ET
UFC 72 , which takes place June 16 in Belfast Ireland, will air on Spike TV, according to UFC.com.
The recently announced event, with an expected headline fight of former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin vs. Martin Kampmann, takes place at the Odyssey Arena during Ireland’s first-ever UFC event.
Just recently, I passed along reports that the event might air on HBO. However, the ongoing negotiations between the UFC and the cable-subscription giant appear stalled — still. The two organizations have been in negotiations since early 2007, but little progress has been made. In fact, the inability for the two sides to come to terms on items such as production crews and broadcast teams forced this weekend’s UFC 70 event to air on Spike TV, rather than HBO as was first planned.
As with UFC 70, UFC 72 will likely air on a tape-delay basis.

Awesome news! I'm actually very surprised that they're announcing this prior to learning what type of ratings they get for UFC 70. Since they're still hung up on negotiations with HBO, I would have typically viewed this as a "see what you could have?" strategy. However, if the ratings are poor (a la the last two TUF series), it could backfire and only give more reason for HBO not to put together a deal.
Regardless, I'm excited anytime I don't have to spend another $40.

This will allow me to afford more pride events also. Paying for 2 ppv in a month can be alittle to much for me. I also think this is a great way for the UFC to bring in more fans.

Yeah it's good and all for the fans but they better pray that some of these fights are explosive because the casual MMA fan is not going to enjoy this card with the exception of maybe seeing Franklin.

That is amazing. Dana White is living up to a lot of the promises he made at the end of 06. Gotta give the UFC credit where it's due. Free cards are always appreciated.

Yeah, because no one knows who Forrest Griffin is.
And the Griffin-Guida fight has the potential to be another fight of the year candidate for Tyson with a banger like Guida.

Wasn't Franklin supposed to get a rematch against Anderson Silva since his last win at UFC 69?

I think its awesome that the UFC decided to give the U.S. fans the ppv's for free instead of trying to charge us for tapedelayed events. It could have been worse....
