Yeah, but just because he got a draw against Jacare doesn't mean his submission-skills are anywhere near those of Jacare's.
Jacare is a lot smaller than Randy, so obviously Randy was able to get the top position with his wrestling. Even then he said he was "basically just surviving" on the ground against Jacare.
Don't get me wrong, Randy definitely has sub-skills. He's been in the game for so long and everyone knows his work ethic. But some people could draw wrong conclusions from that draw.

True, but Jacare is a lot smaller than Gonzaga. I don't know what he weighed when he grappled with Randy, but he's listed as 185 lbs in the Fight Finder.

Who are the better ground guys he's fought?
Gonzaga is somewhere around Barnett's and Ricco Rodriguez's class on the ground (possibly even better), and Randy lost to both of those guys.

Randy is my hero and has the heart the size of a basketball , but Gonzaga has heavy hands and if it goes to the ground it doesn't get any better for randy , Gonzaga is massive , giant chin , submission expert , and will have a good 25 pounds on Randy , Tim was massive I know but its completly different when someone uses there size to there advantage on the ground.
Both of these guys are great and I will be happy no matter the outcome but Gonzaga might be the next HW champ .

i wont bet on this fight... gonzaga is a tough match up for randy but who can really count randy out at this point. Randy will lose some time and i hope it nots for awhile... but age and style is working against him hard in this one!

I am going to wait till I see the odds, but most likely I will be betting on Randy.

Isn't it nice to be talking about a heavyweight title fight and not having the word "boring" being tossed around...ahh
Should be a really good fight but I'll go with the experience factor in this one.

Yeah, nothing about this fight makes me think "boring".

Quick question...
Randy has been known to come up with the ultimate gameplan for a fight. With a fight with a much bigger stronger Gonzaga, what gameplan do you think Randy will use?

who knows if randy wants to stand and land some nice punches. He could easily take down Gonzaga and beat him there, i doubt by TKO because something just says the Gonzaga won't lose that way.

I would hate to see Randy get KO'd by a Gonzaga LHK!
I don't think that Randy will let that happen.
Randy knows his way around the octagon...

I didn't mean to imply that he has the skills that Jacare has, but not getting subbed in ten minutes of grappling with Santos is quite impressive. There were no TD's, which suggest that Couture was not really able to out muscle Jacare. Having top position when it did hit the mat I think is more a testament to his wrestling than his size.

Gonzaga respect Couture
As title says.
ufcmania: "Gonzaga": Randy is a real champion. He is a model of dedication to all of us, and he has nothing left to prove to anybody. This will be a very anticipated fight by the fans and, in the name of my respect to him, I will train double what I trained to face ‘Cro Cop.’”
– UFC heavyweight fighter Gabriel Gonzaga tells Gonzaga Still Celebrating Victory about his gameplan and extensive preparation for Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, as well as his thoughts on facing current UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture at UFC 74 later this year.

I don't know about Gonzaga's cardio, but I really think the only way Couture has to win is 5 rounds of takedowns, ala Tito and Sylvia. I don't think he'd be able to finish. I'm not really sure at all about this match. Gonzaga is still a mystery despite an extraordinary KO of Cro Cop. I lean towards him.

Couture looked tired with Tim, despite dominating.
I can only find one other Gonzaga fight, so its hard to say if Gonzaga has suddenly become really good, or if it was a case of CC being off his game.
Still, as long as Randy can get some intel on Gonzaga, I think he can figure out a solution and win.

Gonzaga has a good combination of size, striking and grappling. he also has youth on his side. Can he beat Randy? i think he has a good chance of doing so. he is'nt a counter striker so its likely he will push the pace and look to wear down Randy and try to exploit his age. you also have to wonder how much of Randy's victory against Tim was due to Tim being supposedly hurt. Tim is supposed to have back surgery so its probably for real. i'd like to say that Gonzaga is here to usher in a new era of UFC heavyweights but i am always wrong in my picks.
