Default Poor Misguided Floyd Mayweather Jr.

So I'm driving home tonight listening to LA-based XTRA Sports 570AM, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. calls into the show to be interviewed. The usual pre-fight promotions ensued, but toward the conclusion of the interview one of the show hosts suprisingly asked Mayweather what he thought about the UFC. Same old song and dance.

Mayweather responded that he's always asked that question lately. In his quick, somewhat scattered response, he blasted the UFC saying:

1. The UFC is just a fad.
2. Anyone can "street fight" for 12 minutes.
3. The UFC is only filled with guys who couldn't hack it as boxers.

My first reaction was that Mayweather is just ignorant, deluded and perhaps a little frightened. Mayweather is a VHS cassette in a world filled with DVDs. But the more that I thought about it, what other answer could he give? The UFC is steadily encroaching on his profession and if he expressed respect for the UFC that would just provide more credibility that potentially detracts from his own sport.

What surprised me even more, was that one of the hosts, Petros Papadakis (also the host of Spike's "Pros vs. Joes), said that he'd much rather watch a boxing match than a UFC bout.

His partner, Matt "Money" Smith, responded by saying that Petros must have been impressed by Randy Couture's domination on the Petros's Spike program. While Petros admitted that Couture was awesome and an incredibly cool guy, he also mentioned that "Couture is a pioneer of the sport. He's not just some brawler with tattoos from Huntington Beach."

Smith added, "You must be referring to Tito."

"No! They're all from Huntington Beach! Every UFC fighter that thinks he can fight, has tattoos and is from Huntington Beach," semi-seriously responded Petros.

Pretty funny, but it still shows how much ignorance there is about the sport. After Mayweather's interview and Petros' comments, they mentioned how the phone lines were lighting up with UFC fans. However, they only took one call from a pro-UFC caller. Their response? Lighten up, Mayweather's just a typical, fast-talking boxer.

I remember when the Bisping fight stopped after he started pounding the **** out of Elvis and I said to myself. This is what makes MMA better than boxing. 1, 2, maybe 3 unaswered hits and they stop the fight.

OneBigThrow is right, freakin Boxers in about 10 years start acting like Mohammad Ali.

Look at Evander Holyfield right now (one of my favorites), a great athlete, ambassador of the sport, but it seems more and more when he's interviewed, he's got the early signs and symptoms of Ali.

And that's truly sad.

Sean Sherk rocks my socks off.

With all of Mayweather's rants, MMANews.com captured Sherk's thoughts on the subject:

Quote:
MMANews.com: Floyd Mayweather, Jr. came out the last couple weeks completely bashing the UFC and stating that any boxer would demolish a UFC fighter in the cage. Dana White (UFC President) came back at Mayweather and named you as the guy who he'd put Mayweather up against, and that you would handle him no problem. What are your thoughts on the whole situation?

Sean Sherk: Well, you know honestly in a boxing match, of course he'd beat me in a boxing match. In an MMA fight, he would be in for a beating. I mean, he's not going to knock me out with one punch; I've got a hard head and have been boxing for 13 years so it's not like I don't know how to box. So, he'd have to land a lot of punches to stop me from taking him down, and me being one of the best wrestlers in the sport, there's no way he could stop me from taking him down.

I don't think that fight would last longer than a minute, to be honest with you. And I don't think he should be talking about something that he can't back up, because I'll fight him tomorrow. I literally would, if they called and asked me to fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. tomorrow, it's done. He's not going to fight me though, and he's just running his mouth. I don't really respect that a whole lot.

True, Mayweather is running his mouth and can't back it up.

I like Sherk. And now I like him even more. If Mayweather were to except this, I'd pay 50 just for that one fight.

I can't stand the guy on Pros vs. Joes. I couldn't imagine actually having to listen to a talk show he hosted. I'd probably drive off an overpass if I did.

I am so looking forward to the DLH v FMJ fight, it is being billed as the last great boxing match, it probably wont be but it will be the last superfight for some time.
Seriously, the only reason I am looking forward to it so much is in the hope that Mayweathers record after the bout reads 37-1.

mayweather is an ass. my girl used to work at a club in vegas that he went in all the time. he's rude to everyone that works there and is an overall asshat.
i wish for no fighter to get hurt, but i hope someone knocks some sense into his peanut sized brain.

I don't think he is worried about UFC encroaching on his sport because he is making lightyears beyond all the UFC fighters combined. Maybe in the up-and-coming generations, it may encroach, but PBF isn't worried about it.

He somehow got into this argument and now he can't back away. You know he will never fight. There will never be a balence. A UFC fighter won't box him, he won't fight a UFC fighter.

Why can't we just respect Boxing and MMA as two different forms of fighting and not always try and compare the two?

have you really ever watched Floyd Mayweather Jr. training , when the Cameras are on him at home, during prefight Interviews the guy is a 100% complete moron LOL His father might be the only one that makes him look smart. He is fast and highly skilled , great pound of pound boxer but taking anything this guy has to say to heart would be foolish , and of course your going to see alot of boxers knocking the UFC , because MMA has taken over boxing for ratings , don King has destroyed the sport of boxing there is about 20 different belts for each weight division , its a complete shame watching it now , the Heavyweight Division is now a PPV joke . I love boxing been doing it for years so this Isn't a hate rant its the truth.

I agree. I like Mayweather as a great technical boxer. BUt as a peronality? He's freakin retard. DId you see him on the HBO DLH/Mayweather special? Acting like he's some gangsta rapper putting 1000 dollar bills on his kitchen table and betting like a moron on Horse-racing. He puts Tony Soprano to shame as far as degenerate gambler

Great boxer. Retarded person. That sums up Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I hope he loses too; I cant think of a fighter anywhere who seriously needs to be knocked down a couple of notches more. I gaurentee if PBF loses in decsion he will mimic Hopkins and start bitchin about how he got robbed. I want to see how PBF handles a loss; as good as he has been I believe we will really see what he is made of after a loss.

I have to admit I wasn't always a big DLH fan, but I gained a ton of respect for him after that Mayorga fight last year. Mayorga was a lil punk saying how he was gonna rape Delahoya's wife, and DLH being the man, went in there and kicked Mayorga's ass.

I hope he does the same with spoiled brat wannabe gangsta Pretty Boy Floyd

De La Hoya has shown nothing but class his entire career win or lose and even though I have never been a fan of his I really respect him for that. I hope some way some how he is the match-up that will give PBF his 1st loss.

^^Very true, that is why I like DLH cause of his class and professionalism....I think PBF wanted to hype this fight so there will be alot of PPV buys but PBF is just making himself look like a bad person.
