Are you serious? I think a lot of kids are posting in this thread thinking that they know about parenting.

I think that you are underestimating my experience with "parenting" and raising children to become successful adults.

A child must constantly be maturing. If not mature, a person will never make it in the real world. A parent can not censor every single word his or her child may here, nor can they censor every single thing the child sees. Sure, the parent can censor some things, especially on the home front. However, it only takes one time for a child to hear a word and then adopt the word into his or her vocabulary. My point being: I think it is better to explain to children what is wrong from right, and teach them to make the right choices in life, rather than try to hide the sometimes harsh realities of the real world. Here is an example. Should parents explain the harmful consequences that are associated with abusing drugs or just let the kids find out for themselves?

I am not saying to allow a three year old to hear obscenities on the TV or some other place. However, sooner or later I think the parent must explain to the child that it is inappropriate to use such obscenities, and not try to censor everything the child hears and sees.

This show is on at 10pm, right? On SpikeTV, right? Parents should be smart enough to realize that there will be cursing...oh the horror.

I have a 19 year old, 17 year old and 15 year old. I watch the Ulitamite Fighter with my 17 year old every week.

Of course there was a time when the where all younger. in those years i blocked channels that had programming on that i did not approve of. I have never let violent video games enter my home either. i know they will wathc and play this stuff at freinds, but I want to be in control of my kids under my roof. I've done a good job, my kids all turned out great. Dont know if the things I have done truely helped, but it couldn't have hurt.

Watching a reality show about men fighting. One has to know there is going to be swearing. Probably not the programming young children should be watching.

Are we ever going to see a multi round decent fight this season?????

All this talk about "controlling" your kids. You are supposed to teach your kids NOT control them.
I think that parents trying to "control" their children will lead to a lot more problems than that child hearing "dick" or "cock"

I agree. A little guidance can go a long way opposed to complete control.

All parents exercise complete control over their kids at some level. Don't be fooled. Just try to go tell somebody how to raise their kids and see how fast you get "smacked" down and told to mind your own business.

So, my friend wants his son to see what MMA is like. Kids love reality TV as much as any other group. His son has already been training MMA for like two years. Wrestling as well. Watching the guys train on TUF is a fairly rare look inside of the training world of MMA.

So, he let his kid watch. He explained what he saw. But, he did not want his kid hearing "DICK, DICK, DICK" every five seconds. Everything else was bleeped. And, the few antics that earned some scorn, like pissing on beds and gyn equipment, can be explained as pranks or jokes or seriously bad behaviors.

I would never let my own kid(s) watch most of what appears on TV, but then again I don't have kids and it's easy for me to say that.

I am not trying to tell someone how to raise their children nor would I do so. I am just simply stating my opinion on the matter.

No matter what some parents may think, no parent has complete control over their children. Kids have minds of their own.I think that the more the parents try to control their kids, the more the kids become rebellious.

I just do not think the best approach to your friends situation was to not let his son watch the show at all. I think that hearing the some vulgar words is a small price to pay if he really wants his son to get an inside look at MMA. Children will more than likely listen if the parent just explains the situation. Example being: "The word that he is using is not respectful, and you should not repeat it at any time." The kid would probably understand and go right back to watching the show.

Many shows that I enjoy I cannot watch due to language and my children in the house. Family Guy is now off limits. They will probably hear about this show at school and the offensive language as well, but in my house, hate to say it, but my rules. My rules are to teach my children to utilize the English language as effectively as possible without the unnecessary profanities that are generally used in lieu of a sophisticated vocabulary.

I think your situation is different than that of Subgenius' friend. I totally agree with you. Family Guy is definitely inappropriate for children. Kids can learn nothing from the show. However, I think if someone really wants their kid to learn about MMA, watching TUF and hearing a few words is just a small price to pay in the end.

He lets his son watch the UFC events and the WEC and IFL stuff on TV. I have talked to him about the blood and violence end of MMA. Ironically, he said, "Well, he sees that at school." LOL. I know, I know. It's a weird double standard. My pal agreed essentially with marnold. He wants to teach his son respect and language skills that do not include profanity and broken English. MMA and wrestling, according to my friend, teach discipline and respect as well. I mentioned Tito Ortiz and he said, "There's always an exception." Most MMA fighters are decent sportsman-like guys. He tells his son, "Be like Bas." He says it a lot. The 10 year old kid knows Bas Rutten. So, that's cool, IMO.
