Rumor: Minotauro & Mir To Coach TUF 8
From FiveOuncesOfPain via Cage Potato...
Quote:
Cage Potato is reporting that Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira have been selected as the coaches for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter reality television show:
'An unofficial source tells Cage Potato that the coaches have been signed for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, and they are none other than UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former champ Frank Mir.'
This would indicate that Mir will get the next title shot against Nogueira and the two will likely face off in a pay per view extravaganza at the end of the season. Coming off of a season with personable guys like Forrest and Rampage, Nogueira and Mir may be a change for the worst. The UFC seems infatuated with making the coaches for TUF fight one another for a title at the end of the season but I don’t think Mir and Nogueira will be able to carry a season of TUF like Forrest and Rampage, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture, etc.
Most of the fanbase only knows Frank Mir because he beat Brock Lesnar and most of them have no clue about Nogueira’s past history and likely have only seen him fight because they bought the UFC 81 pay per view that Lesnar vs. Mir was a part of. Putting these two as the coaches of the next season could prove to be costly as far as ratings go.
|
Not bad choices in my opinion, except that I don't know if Minatauro's English is good enough. My initial thoughts were also that Mir doesn't deserve a title shot yet, but with the mass exodus in the HW division, who else is there?

I agree with Opsy.
This is a great match up but I guess this means we wont see Nog fight until at least the end of the year?

I concur, this would be sweet.
A bit off topic, but this seasons coach match up didn't get me too stoked. Jackson deserved it but Forrest wasn't the best pick. Would have rather seen Jardine or many others.

Ahh the irony. Could TUF, often credited with giving the UFC new life, become the source of its decline? First, we had the mess with Serra and Hughes that turned out to throw a wrench into the gears of the UFC's best division. Now the beleaguered HW division will be held hostage by the reality show. This is a poor choice by the UFC not because of who the coaches are, but because of the timing. What if one of the fighters gets hurt? Will we have an interim interim champion? This situation seems to do little to help those who seek to legitimize MMA as a sport and seems to add fodder to its detractors. Wouldn't we all be better off if the coaches were the top 2 contenders in a division and the winner of their fight would then get a title shot?

Wow what a dumb idea, couldnt they just have these 2 fight in October, or hell even have Nog fight Werdum/Vera winner in the fall.
The whole title holders involved in TUF coaching really is starting to suck.

Yeah, I think that's the plan.
Well he "gots" plenty of time before having to face Nog.

For me I will say, a title will need to be defend 3 times in a year. It's different if they have injured. But need to defend 3 times a year and if not, you lose it that it.

Sources in both fighters' camps have stated nothing is signed, only that each is under consideration. The other rumor that came out 4 weeks ago was that it would be GSP and Fitch if GSP prevails this weekend.
At this point, its still a rumor.

I really wish Anderson Silva spoke english. It would be very interesting to see a fighter like him as a coach. I personally think if he would learn the language he could be as popular as Chuck or Randy.

I'd would prefer GSP/Fitch much more, but that would probably mean they wouldn't square off until next December. I'm tired of the delays in such a stacked division, it definitely ruins the flow. With Mir/Nog, a delay could help the HW division get more talent over those months.

I agree. Just go for two big names (who aren't champions) and let them fight other people in the mean time. These delays suck!

GSP and Fitch would be great. Why, do you think, are the coaches now of different weight classes than the TUF cast members? Is it to avoid any potential conflicts of interest? Would it be difficult for WWs to effectively coach HWs, for example?
