I know what you're saying about wrestling being rough and sometimes getting out of hand, but in general and for the most part, it has nothing to do with fighting, IT'S FAKE!!!
On average, pro wrestlers would do as well in the Octogon as a baseball or football team, or some of the tougher guys from the local bar. Sure some might do all right, but the best of them against a UFC champ? Not bloody likely.
That was a great point you made about movies vs. wrestling vs reality. I honestly never thought of it that way before. I guess that's why I really never got wrestling. That plus the simple plot lines, phony posturing and general noise level.
Are you sure Star Wars didn't happen a long time ago in a galaxy far away?

LOL. Star Wars rules!
I think we agree here. I think that less than 10%, maybe less than 5%, of pro-wrestlers would even be able to get into the octagon. Frank Trigg said it best, "99.9% of the human race could not compete in an MMA match." That may be an exaggeration, but I think that it says a lot. I also agree with him that MMA is hard on the body.
MMA is HARD every which way. It is more than just being able to take the pain (althought that is important). It is a deeply technical sport (despite what boxers are saying). Some guys can train one year and do well, while others train all their lives and barely make headway. MMA is unforgiving in that way. It hurts. If you do not know what you are doing, you could get seriously injured. I think that is part of what TUF is all about. Showing people that these MMA fighters are the elite of human competion.
While MMA is deeply concerned about safety, they do not script out matches other than having a decent game plan. Pro-wrestling shares that concern, but what they do is considerably more dangerous. Not because of the pseudo-fighting, but because of the often dangerous acrobatics and falling from heights. Rick Rude fell from the top of a ring corner post in a match in Japan. He telescoped his kneck. It pretty much ended his career as a headliner. Owen Hart fell to his death in front of some 20,000 fans when a stunt failed. Pro-wrestling is about trying to limit these injuries, and eliminate deaths all together. No one performs the Owen Hart stunt any more.
What I hate is that steroids do play a huge part in many pro-wrestlers lives. That is a bad issue, and that will keep easily two-thirds of the pro-wrestlers out of MMA. Rick Rude died from steroid abuse and what doctors said was "too many blows to the head" in pro-wrestling. Steroids are pushed on smaller pro-wrestlers to get them pumped up to be bigger -- to market them. THAT is what I hate. It makes me mad to hear about steroid abuse in pro-wrestling and MMA.
At least Tim Sylvia admitted his abuse, and gave up his title way back in the day before AA was the champ. But, it mad me so damn angry.

Hey Bomber -- how old are you? I only ask, because I grew up fairly close to where you live now, and I have great memories from my youth of the kickass pro-wrestling shows that would hit the Sudbury Arena. I only watched them on TV, though, but they had tons of big names on a regular basis. Dino Bravo, Rick Martel, Tom Zenk, The Rougeau brothers, Sheik Ali, Abdullah the Butcher, Sargeant Slaughter, Baron Von Raschke, the Road Warriors would be in a few times a year, etc. It was totally one of the best towns for the AWA in those days.

LOL! I'm old enough to know all those names and some of their predecessors.
Yes, Sudbury was a rough old mining town, and wrestling was always a big draw.

I think that The Road Warriors were my all-rime favorite tag-team. I loved watching Hawk and Animal in the 1980's. I first saw them in the AWA. They came into the ring with the Black Sabbath song Ironman playing. They would storm the ring and annihilate the other team. When they moved to the NWA, I was so damn happy. In the WWF (now the WWE), I ws not happy, but was still a fan. The old AWA and the old NWA were much better than the old WWF, IMO.
Just a clue to my age: I started watching wrestling when the NWA still had the old Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling. Those were some great days for pro-wrestling. Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Double-A Arn Anderson, Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniels, Manny Fernandez, etc, etc... Good times, good times, LOL.
That is actually how I feel about the UFC now. It is like we are all living in a sort of golden age of MMA. The UFC and TUF have made that even more of an impact. Whatever they do with TUF5, I am sure it will be cool.

It makes me mad to hear about steroid abuse in pro-wrestling and MMA.
Steroids are dirty business. Would you know what kind of testing program the UFC uses? Are fighters tested before or after fights? Is there ongoing testing?
It is a deeply technical sport (despite what boxers are saying).
You're preaching to the choir here. I was shocked at how poorly boxers fared in the early days of the UFC. And the MMA fighting systems have only gotten deeper and more refined since then.
Sure, a boxer can get lucky in MMA and pull out a KO, but that's pretty rare. Normally he's taken down immediately and he's as helpless as a baby. Yet if you tell a boxing fan that Randy Couture would probably destroy Mike Tyson, they laugh at you.

Steamboat was already in the WWF when I got into wrestling, but my cousin had been a subscriber to PWI for years already, so I'm well-versed in all the regional promotions. And yeah, I agree. There was nothing like the NWA and AWA back then. Remember Nick Bockwinkle's 1 hour draw with Ric Flair? Or the Road Warriors winning the first Crockett Cup? Or their scaffold matches with the Midnight Express?
I was really into the UWF when it first started out and was independent. They had such a packed roster -- Williams & DiBiase, the Freebirds, Sting & Steiner, One Man Gang, Terry Taylor, Buzz Sawyer, Bubba Rogers...
When Ronnie Garvin pinned Ric Flair in a cage at Starrcade in Detroit, that's when my passion for pro wrestling was at its peak.

Whats this got to do with TUF5? I think all the UFC and Pride title holders would own the crap out of any WWE fighter. Maybe some of the lower ranked MMA fighters would lose but the top ranked like Fedor and Liddell would definately win a fight with any WWE superstar.
CAN YOU DIG IT SUCKKKKAAAA!?!?!

I agree. We got a bit off track there, but I think someone who's dedicated their life to real fighting will always be able to beat the hell out of someone who's dedicated their life to acrobatic pretend-fighting.
OH, IT'S TRUE! IT'S DAMNED TRUE!

I always like the pro-wrestling catch phrases.
And, Angle's shtick is always very entertaining.
The only connection to TUF is that we were speculating about TUF5 having some pro-wrestlers go against MMA fighters. Of course, this would not be the premier PRIDE FC and UFC fighters going against the pro-wrestlers. I doubt we will ever see Fedor, Wanderlei, Liddell, Franklin, or Hughes on TUF as anything other than a coach...
But, we can speculate more. What if they had a boxers versus MMA fighters line up on TUF? Or, kickboxers versus MMA fighters? Maybe Muai Thai? It does not have to be pro-wrestlers.

Those are classics. Hands of Stone Ronnie Garvin was one of my favorites. I liked it when he teamed up with his brother, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin. Girls go crazy for a sharp dressed man, LOL. Sting and Steiner have finally popped back up on TNA wrestling. I like Scott Stiener despite him being a roid baby. And, the Stieners do have real wrestling experience from their days at Michigan State.
