Default Randy Couture and Georges St. Pierre to coach TUF 4

I saw saw on UFC's website that it's official Randy Couture and Georges St. Pierre will be the coaches for the upcoming season.

its so odd that Randy is getting a second season, not that he is'nt qualified but we've all seen him. they must be playing youth vs. experience or something. maybe Randy can redeem himself this time after Chuck kicked his butt in choosing the better fighters. he did pass on Forrest Griffin with the idea that he was a bully and a thug.

Not to be nitpicky but they aren't coaches. They are "advisors" whatever that means. Apparently there is a difference though.

I like Captain America as an advisor. I want Randy Couture to be a face for the UFC at events and shows. I love it when he commentates. I sure do not mind him being retired, even though I want to see him fight again. But, I do not want him to just fade away either.

Totally agree. Plus the guy's only 44, too young to retire. What's he gonna do for an income if the UFC doesn't hire him for some gigs? He deserves to stay in the sport in some manner, and who could be more deserving?

I think 44 is plenty old to retire, even for a guy in Couture's condition. And he'll be fine for income. He makes money off Team Quest, and he's opening that Legends gym with Bas, which will probably be pretty successful. He'll pick up more acting work in action films here and there, and I would imagine that with the way he's been paid for fighting over the last few years, he's probably invested it pretty wisely. I'm sure Randy's set up financially, and anything the UFC gives him now is just icing on the cake. The guy's probably my #1 favourite MMA fighter of all time, and I still want him to stay retired.

I agree with Sitnspin - I think Randy picked a good time to retire - he has nothing more to prove to UFC fans anyway, he's obviously one of the best. Him and Shamrock are my favourite MMA fighters of all time, so I'm gonna miss seeing his fighting style in future UFC events. At least Shamrock is still around... I just wish he'd stop gunning for all the younger guys who are still at the top of their games...

As for TUF4, I don't mind seeing Randy as an advisor. This is still a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent without leaving him damaged afterwards. I was a little surprised when I heard that Georges St. Pierre was also going to be an advisor, but after careful consideration I sort of said "why not?". He's got all the tools albeit with significantly less experience than Randy. I think TUF4 should make for an excellent show.

GSP said recently that he plans to learn as much from the fighters as he can. That this is as much a learning experience for him as it will be for anyone that he advises. I am willing to bet that he also takes notes from Randy Couture's training and skills.

Absolutely. GSP's no dummy. He knows that collectively there's a TON of experience on these two teams, and a real mix of styles. It's a totally different show this time out, where the fighters have already fought top-level competition in the UFC. That's why GSP and Couture are being called advisors and they won't be in the same roles as the coaches on previous seasons. I'm really excited about watching all these guys train together.

I'm anticipating the best TUF yet. These guys will be serious about performing.

Sitnspin, if I had Randy's money, I'd throw mine away. It's great that he'll be seen in public for the sport.

I'm really suprised to hear GSP is involved here, for the simple fact that he has a title fight coming up. I would think that he'd be at the gym just training for this fight.

This does solve something for me though; when Bisping won, he thanked GSP for helping him train here in Las Vegas and I said to myself "what is GSP doing in Las Vegas?" I would have thought he'd be training at his gym in Montreal... I guess he was advising TUF4.

Not only that, but if he were to win the belt, his first fight might be a defence against the guys he's training. GSP seems an odd choice for TUF this time.

Spike TV'S web site has a whole list of the fighters with post show interviews. It ought to get interesting on this show.

Bad move for GSP at this time, IMHO.

Well supposedly it's for fighters to make a "comeback" (hence the subtitle of the show) but it makes me wonder since they threw Scott Smith in there. WTF is that about? The dude is only 0-1 in a controversial loss in the UFC. But it's supposed to be guys who didn't quite make it in the UFC and are going to make a comeback. I'll definitely be pulling for Smith since he kind of got screwed in his first fight in the UFC.

they are advisors because all the guys are very experienced.... lindland isnt going to need a coach like GSP because hes been everywhere already... not sure what the advisor role entails but thats prolly why they arent coachs...
as far as GSP training in las vegas with guys like bisping, so what?? im SURE he takes that all into account and has a great training plan... cant critisize any of that unless you know exactly what it entails...

Matt Lindland's not on the show. That was an early rumor that didn't end up coming true.

Edited to add: By the way. TUF4 has been finished filming for about two weeks, so GSP has plenty of time to focus on the Hughes fight. Six weeks is the standard camp for a fight.

i was going to mention the filming schedule probably would'nt coincide with GSP's upcoming title fight. GSP is no fool and would do anything to screw up something he's been waiting for his whole life. this might be a season to actually watch since its all seasoned fighters that know what it means to be a fighter for a living and to have already been at the top once.
