I absolutely recommend it. In terms of this type of game (MMORPGs -- Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), I've played most of them and I believe it's the best, for a variety of reasons.
Be warned, though. Games don't come more addictive than this. You'll be amazed how quickly 12 hours will fly by. You think I'm kidding...

I have been an Everquest player for years, I thought about trying WoW, but I have been told the content doesn't compare and it's full of immature kids that are hard to avoid. I can tell you MMORPG's are a lot of fun and very addictive. GL with WoW if you try it out make sure you give us some feedback.

What are the controls like? Is there a pretty learning curve, or are they pretty easy to learn once you get going?
Well, keep in mind that it's turn based and menu-driven, not what they call "twitch" (twitch means that you have to actually dodge and attack in real time, and your skill and dexterity are what count). If you played any of the old Final Fantasy games, I'd compare it to that.
There is, however, tons of strategy and technique to the combat because you have a lot of abilities that interact with each other and your teammates' abilities in a wide variety of ways. So you definitely have to learn how to play your class (warrior, priest, rogue, mage, etc) if you want to do well at the game. The good thing is the game starts you off very slowly and teaches you the basics as you progress.
You can always find people to group with (I disagree with the earlier statement that there are more idiots and kids playing WoW than EQ. There are just more people playing all together, and there are plenty of mature players), or you can also play solo. Some classes are easier to do that than others. As a rogue, I'm able to stealth past enemies to get to those hard-to-reach places, I can backstab to do major damage before my victim even has a chance to respond, and if things get too tough I can vanish in a puff of smoke and get away.

ugh brings back memories of diablo 2... so many wasted hours in that game. Also, if you havent checked it out yet, Guild Wars is a pretty good game too. Its not a traditional mmo, but still fun. One of my friends got me into guildwars, but uh he moved onto WoW and I didnt :-p

The advantage of Guild Wars is that you don't have to pay a monthly fee to play. You just buy the game, and you can play forever. The catch with GW is that all their best weapons and equipment are available to purchase with your credit card, so people who are majorly hooked end up spending money every month anyway.

The crappy part about installing the game on your PC for the first time and getting started is that there have been tons of updates (as there are on an almost weekly basis) so you're in store for a long, long period of waiting while your newly-installed game patches up to the most up-to-date version.

Hey Pitbull -- are you already a PC gamer? I only ask to make sure you have somewhat decent hardware specs. WoW isn't a hugely demanding game in that way, but you should have a decent video card and a gig of RAM. Because you're playing on a server that's got thousands of other live players on it at the same time, any less than a gig of RAM and you'll find things slow down substantially in crowded areas (known in MMO terminology as "lag").

meh wow isnt a terribly demanind game, I played a couple days of a trial on my ****ty laptop, specs are 512ram, onboard video 6150, and a sempron 3400. I had pretty much everything on the lowest settings and there was some slow down occasionally, but nothing too bad.
