America's Army - AWESOME FPS - 100% Free
America's Army - Special Forces - Home Page
Does anybody here play this game? I've played it for years now but my video card can't handle it. I'm downloading it now on my bro's computer and praying it works. This is the most strategic FPS I've played. If you can make it through your first twenty hours of play, you'll find it enjoyable. The only problem is it's a lot to get used to. It's the most difficult game I've played. You'll find yourself making amateur moves that everyone has made; these mistakes are almost inevitable, and after you make them you have to sit there and wait for the next game to start which takes a few minutes.
The format is team vs team. To win you eliminate the opposition, and on each map there are different objectives. There are usually two or three things: Flags to capture, tanks to plant bombs on, computers to access- securing these things wins the match for your team, but most wins come from killing all your enemies.
The weapons are all very authentic. M16s, M204s (Scarface's "Little Friend"), SAWs, different types of Sniper Rifles, 'nades, flashbangs, smokebombs... There's a variety of maps ranging from urban communities in foreign locations to several different types of wilderness (snowlands, desert, marshland, rocky escarpment), an desert storm military compound, an Alaskan style compound, an industrial warehouse type place, an underground tunnel with trashed vehicles all around (the graphics are top notch)...there's also some new levels I haven't checked out, like The Hospital.
The game is free because it's made by the US Army, probably to encourage young ins to join up with the force...but that's just speculation. Either way, awesome, awesome game.
Anyway, my name on this game is IDRATHERHAVEAKNIFE. If you see me you better hope you're on my team, otherwise you dead mofo!

Out of curiosity, have you played any other games of this style? Because there are a bunch that are every bit as realistic in terms of physics and strategy, but they look and play a lot better too.
I'd recommend Rainbow Six: Raven Shield. It's been out for a long time so it now retails for about ten bucks, but it's superior to America's Army in every way.

I haven't played many games of this style, but the ones I have played I haven't really been able to get into. I'll give Raven Shield a chance next time I've got some coin.

Yeah, like I said, it's super cheap (not free, though -- lol), complex, and RUTHLESS. The main difference that I should warn you about is that in the single player missions, you're contolling the entire team. You set up a mission with waypoints and attach commands. So for example, when you hit the key that gives the command "Alpha -- go!", the guys you've designated as your advance team will run to the first waypoint and do what you directed (wait, snipe, smoke and engage, etc). You can switch to any guy on the team and play the way you're used to at any point as well.
It takes some getting used to, and it's brutal, but really cool. When you start playing online it's more of the traditional Counter-Strike / America's Army style, only it seems like the player community is a little more mature because the single player game is so tough and complex that it weeds out the kids and the morons.

I tried it once but I got tired of the CO giving me lip and the fact that training took for freakin ever so I shot him in the face and it never let me out of 'boot camp'.

I used to play it years ago, but when I finally got a new computer, I just couldn't get back into it. I started playing BF2 and like that as well.

Yeah me and my cs friends got into it awhile back and played it for like 6 months, not really a huge fan. Good game but it certainly has it's flaws. I'll play every now and again though.
