johno | The cut didn't seem to effect him when he fought and stopped Alan Green a few weeks ago. He still seemed to have the conditioning. Johnson will make life he'll for any of the other fighters inthe tournament even if he doesn't win.
I would have gotten rid of the round robin format. It was too fiddly and I think a clearer lose and your out format would have brought more excitement.
Also, I would have made sure the fighters all fought on the same card, on the same night with the fights much closer in time. With some real production so that the tourney had a piper identity instead of what it was: a rag tag of different fights, different production, different belts and different dates.
But that's the problem with boxing isn't it? Too many people eeking out their slice of the cake so there's no chance everyones going to sign up to one big single promotion like I was kinda getting at. |
I never watched the Green-Johnson fight mainly, because I didnt think Green would be that competitve regardless. I"ll take your word that Johnson looked good, but my pick will still be Froch to blast him. I agree a simple 8-man tournament, with entire rounds happening in one night, in one neutral location wouldve been a much better set up. But your right, every promoter wouldve had to take a smaller cut for that to happen, regardless if it may have led to the tournament being a larger success in the end. Oh well, I still commend the promoters and Showtime for trying something new, and look forward to the finals and the future fights it leads to.

kev0 | What would you have done to improve the format Johno? An also, do you really think Glen Johnson is gonna offer much dropping down to 168 at this stage of his career? |

johno | Im really looking forward to Froch vs Johnson... I look forward to most of Johnsons fights lol
Johnson vs Clinton Woods is one of my fav fights, was the fight i watched when I was waiting for the hospital to phone to tell me if Claire had went into labour first time round so its a bit special to me.
I dont think the super six is a mess, there were just a few mistakes in the format. We got some great moments and its brought a lot of interest into a division that was lacking somewhat. |

Agree on ward> I missed the first fight. Ward did what he had to do to beat Bika, but wasn't the run way the scorecards made it to be.

It was really the whole round robin format that messed it all up. If they had done a great 8 and let the winners move on with random seeding like a real tourney, it would have been much better. Once Taylor couldn't continue after the brutal KO's, it really went off the rail.

Should really just pull the plug on this and have Froch and Ward showdown to crown a winner. The inevitable barrage of injuries and politics really have sidetracked the whole thing. Andre Dirrell clowning the entire tournament certainly didn't help any. A few good fights have come out of it, so its not a total loss, and if it indeed plays out with a Ward/Froch final, the winner will be set up for a pretty big fight with Lucian Bute (hopefully). Still feel Showtime (and the promoters involved) deserve a lot of credit for trying something like this.

I caught the Froch/Abraham fight the other night.
Froch looked good in the decision as he regained the WBC super MW belt.
After that, they showed Ward vs. Bika (non-tourney bout). Ward did well too and clearly won but I didn't see it quite as lopsided as they were making it sound. The announcers on SHO were clearly rooting for Ward.
From what I've seen on Wiki and a few other places, the final will shake out like this in 2011: Winner of Ward/Abraham semi-final vs. Winner of Froch/Johnson semi-final
Of course, that's provided one of those guys doesn't drop out. This "Super Six" has been quite a debacle, unfortunately.
