More power to him if he can. He's definitely a world class athlete, has the work ethic, and has trained with world class wrestlers before.

Doesn't he train with the Canadian Olympic team? Wouldn't how he fairs with them give him a pretty good indication of how he could do?

True.
He won't make it on the team by his name alone. He'll have to qualify like everyone else. So if he makes it, then he deserves to go to the Olympics.
I say go for it!

I would be very impressed if GSP wouldn't get mauled in the Olympics. I do believe he'll get mauled though.

Exactly. He trains with Canadas best guys up there, in wrestling not MMA. He seems like a humble guy and from what I heard he is at that lvl so good for him, I would watch. Would be a nice shot in the arm for wrestling too. Win win.

The first time I would root for Canada in anything.

I am supporting GSP but I don't think GSP will be very successful. He has the takedowns and takedown defense when you are worried about the strikes. How is GSP going to do when when you have to worry about the pins, reversals, near-fall rules?

im not sure about this wrestling is a lot different from Grappling in MMA since there are no strikes and your going for pins not submissions and the guard is not used. I think it would be hard going from MMA wrestling to wrestling and the double legs in real wrestling are different then MMA.

I guess his balls have healed enough to wrestle but not to fight.

Two very very different things

I'd like to see him try for it. GSP definitely has the skill required to be an Olympic level wrestler in my opinion. He's been able to outwrestle everyone he's faced in the UFC including Hughes and Koscheck who are two of the most accomplished wrestlers in the UFC.

Being able to out wrestle guys who are also trying to defend a nasty fist from hitting them in the face is a lot different then a pure breed wrestler that does not have to focus on that.

I think he would fair well but I don't think he would win it.

Guile would know more though.

GSP may resume goal of making Canadian Olympic wrestling team

MANCHESTER -- UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre says he may take a crack at making the Canadian Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 Summer Games.

"It's something in my mind but the thing is I'm on contract with the UFC," the Montreal mixed martial arts star told reporters Friday prior to the UFC 105 weigh-in. "So I have to be very careful in what I'm saying, but we'll see."

"There is a big difference between saying I want to go to the Olympic Games and actually going to the Olympic Games," he added. "It's very hard. To do the tryouts and everything it's very hard. You have to pass through a bunch of obstacles before you get there."

UFC president Dana White seemed supportive when told of St. Pierre's Olympic dream.

"It would be great if he won a medal," White told a UFC conference call later Friday.

Be cool to see St. Pierre go for this. Also be cool if DW was ok with it because I thought he was against the idea before and it seems to go against his anti-sambo stance as well.
